Union Minister for Food, Civil Supplies, and Public Distribution, Prahlad Joshi, has greenlit the establishment of a Regional Office for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) in Tripura. The decision was announced during a high-level meeting at the Secretariat in Agartala, where the Union Minister reviewed the implementation of central schemes in the state.
In the meeting, it was resolved that the state government would allocate the required land for the proposed FCI office in Agartala, with a project proposal to be submitted to the Central Government soon.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha, Agriculture Minister Ratan Lal Nath, Food and Civil Supplies Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, Chief Secretary JK Sinha, Secretary Dr. PK Chakraborty, and other senior officials participated in the discussions.
Union Minister Joshi lauded the state government’s progress in implementing development programs and urged officials to strengthen the functioning of fair price shops. He also highlighted the need to expedite schemes like PM Surya Ghar Yojana and PM KUSUM to benefit citizens further.
“The Northeast’s development under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership is unprecedented in the past 75 years. I will personally discuss the issues raised by the state with the relevant central ministries,” the Minister said.
Chief Minister Saha attributed the state’s growth in sectors like tourism, agriculture, and horticulture to the Prime Minister’s Act East policy, which he credited for boosting the region’s per capita income. He also referenced Union Home Minister Amit Shah’s recent visit to the state during the North Eastern Council’s 72nd Plenary Session to emphasize ongoing developmental strides.
During his visit, Minister Joshi inspected a Fair Price Shop in Agartala to assess the efficiency of biometric systems for ration distribution. He interacted with beneficiaries to gather feedback and pledged to improve the system further.
This move is expected to strengthen food security operations and bolster economic growth in Tripura, aligning with the state and central governments’ developmental goals for the Northeast.
