Tripura Transport Department and Traffic Police conducted an enforcement drive in Agartala against unauthorised auto-rickshaws violating new city operation rules. The drive aims to reduce traffic congestion and ensure compliance with colour-coding and registration guidelines.
The Transport Department, in coordination with the Traffic Unit of Tripura Police, conducted a major enforcement drive on Wednesday against unauthorised auto-rickshaws operating within the city areas of Agartala. The drive aimed to curb traffic congestion and ensure strict compliance with recently issued transport regulations.
According to officials, several auto-rickshaws were found ferrying passengers in violation of restrictions imposed by the Transport Department. These restrictions clearly prohibit auto-rickshaws registered outside the Agartala Municipal Corporation area from operating within city limits. Despite repeated awareness campaigns, many drivers were still found violating the rules.
To address the growing traffic congestion in Agartala, the Transport Department recently introduced a new set of operational guidelines. Under the revised norms, only auto-rickshaws registered within the city corporation area are permitted to transport passengers inside city zones. The decision was taken after traffic authorities observed increasing congestion caused by unrestricted movement of vehicles from suburban and rural areas.
For city-registered auto-rickshaws, the department has also introduced a mandatory colour-coding system to easily distinguish authorised vehicles. However, officials noted that while some three-wheeler owners complied with the new colour guidelines, a significant section failed to implement the changes, thereby violating the updated rules.
Speaking to media persons during the enforcement drive, the Motor Vehicle Inspector (MVI) leading the operation stated that auto drivers found violating the colour code regulations were summoned to the department office and asked to submit explanations. “This is a clear violation of the new transport rules, and the concerned drivers have been directed to appear before us,” the MVI said.
Auto-rickshaws entering the city from neighbouring areas were also stopped and summoned for hearings. Authorities clarified that no fines have been imposed so far. “We have not penalised anyone yet. The drivers have been called to our office to present their explanations. If they fail to provide satisfactory responses, fines will be imposed as per provisions of the Motor Vehicles Act,” the MVI added.
Officials emphasised that the primary objective of the enforcement drive is not punishment but effective traffic management. The Transport Department reiterated its commitment to reducing congestion, improving road safety, and ensuring smooth vehicular movement in Agartala.

Further enforcement drives are expected in the coming days, and authorities have urged auto-rickshaw owners and drivers to strictly comply with the new regulations to avoid legal action.
