A shocking double murder in Tripura’s Gomati district sees a school teacher kill his wife and son before attempting suicide. Police probe mental health angle as another assault case in Agartala raises concerns over safety in educational institutions.
In a deeply disturbing incident that has sent shockwaves across Tripura, a 52-year-old government school teacher allegedly murdered his wife and teenage son before attempting to take his own life in Gomati district. The tragic घटना unfolded early Monday morning and has raised serious concerns about mental health and domestic stability.
According to police officials, the accused, identified as Ajit Das, was employed as a science teacher in a government school. Preliminary investigations suggest that he attacked his wife, Rupa Das (45), and their son, Diganta Das (18), using a bamboo staff while they were asleep. Both victims succumbed to their injuries on the spot.
The incident took place in Beltoli under the jurisdiction of Radha Kishore Pur Police Station in Gomati district. Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Udaipur, Debanjali Ray, confirmed that the police reached the scene shortly after local residents reported hearing distressing screams from the house.
Following the attack, Ajit Das allegedly attempted suicide by consuming pesticide. He was immediately rushed to Gomati District Hospital, where he remains in critical condition under medical supervision. Hospital authorities have indicated that his condition is serious and unstable.
The bodies of the deceased have been sent for post-mortem examination as part of the ongoing investigation. Police officials stated that early findings point toward possible mental health issues faced by the accused in recent days. Family members have also reportedly indicated behavioral changes, which investigators are now examining closely.
The gruesome nature of the crime has left the entire Udaipur region, located about 65 kilometers from Agartala, in a state of grief and disbelief. Diganta Das, the couple’s son, was reportedly pursuing engineering at a private university in Agartala, adding another layer of tragedy to the incident.
Separate Incident Raises Safety Concerns in Schools
In a separate but equally alarming development, a female teacher was allegedly assaulted at Umakanta Government English Medium School in Agartala. Reports suggest that the accused is a former teacher of the same institution, though no immediate legal action has been taken.
The incident has sparked widespread concern regarding safety within educational institutions. Representatives from the All India Working Women’s Coordination Committee (AIWWCC), a Left-affiliated organization, have intervened by meeting senior officials of the Education Department.
A delegation led by Panchali Bhattacharjee urged authorities to take swift and strict action against the accused and implement stronger safety measures for teachers across schools.
Ongoing Investigation
Police have launched a detailed probe into both incidents. Authorities are focusing on uncovering the motive behind the double murder and assessing whether mental health support systems were lacking. The twin incidents have intensified calls for stronger institutional safeguards and mental health awareness initiatives in the state.
