Tripura Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman met West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay in Kolkata to discuss restoring reserved seats for Tripura students in West Bengal government engineering and textile institutions. The initiative aims to expand higher education opportunities and strengthen academic cooperation between the two states.
The state’s Higher Education Minister Kishor Barman met West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay at Bikash Bhavan in Kolkata on Wednesday. The meeting focused on restoring reserved seats for Tripura students in several government-run higher educational institutions in West Bengal.
According to information shared by Minister Kishor Barman, the discussions centered on the resumption of reserved seats for students from Tripura in government engineering colleges as well as prestigious institutions such as the Government College of Engineering and Textile Technology at Serampore and Berhampore. These reserved seats had reportedly been discontinued in previous years, limiting educational opportunities for students from the northeastern state.
The Tripura minister described the meeting as productive and said the issue was raised keeping in mind the educational aspirations of students seeking quality technical and professional education outside the state. He emphasized that many students from Tripura have traditionally benefited from admission opportunities in West Bengal’s government institutions, particularly in engineering and textile technology courses.
During the meeting, West Bengal Higher Education Minister Jagannath Chattopadhyay assured his Tripura counterpart that the state government would take necessary steps to facilitate the restoration of the reserved seats. The assurance has been welcomed as a positive development for students and parents in Tripura who are looking for greater access to quality higher education institutions.
Kishor Barman stated that the restoration of these seats would significantly broaden the scope of higher education for students from Tripura and strengthen educational ties between the two neighboring states. He noted that such collaborations are essential for ensuring that students receive better academic opportunities and exposure in specialized fields.
The initiative is expected to benefit a large number of students aspiring to pursue professional and technical education in reputed government institutions. Education experts believe that reopening reserved seats could help deserving students gain admission to quality colleges while also promoting academic exchange between the two states.
In a separate engagement during his visit to Kolkata, Kishor Barman also met West Bengal School Education Minister Deepak Barman. The two leaders discussed various issues related to education and the role of the sector in national development. The discussions reportedly covered broader educational cooperation and measures to improve learning opportunities for students.
