Tripura’s Minister for Transport, Sushanta Chowdhury, is actively pursuing measures to improve international rail and air connectivity, as well as bolster economic growth and regional prosperity. In letters addressed to Union Ministers Amit Shah and Ashwini Vaishnaw, he has raised significant requests.
In a letter, Chowdhury has urged Union Home Minister Amit Shah to designate Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport as an immigration checkpoint and declare it an international airport. This critical step would pave the way for the initiation of Agartala-Chittagong international flight operations, enhancing cross-border travel and trade between the two regions.
In support of this move, the Home Department of the Government of Tripura has already deployed ten police personnel to the Bureau of Immigration at MBB Airport, with a commitment to provide an additional five as needed. This move demonstrates the state’s readiness to ensure smooth immigration services at the airport.
Furthermore, Sushanta Chowdhury has penned a separate letter to Union Minister for Railways Ashwini Vaishnaw, emphasising the importance of regular goods and passenger train services in the newly inaugurated Agartala Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link Project. This project is seen as a catalyst for economic growth and regional prosperity, as it facilitates people’s movement and the transportation of goods.
The Agartala-Akhaura Cross Border Rail Link Project holds the potential to significantly contribute to the development of tourism, industry, trade, and investment, thus creating new opportunities for job creation and improving the quality of life for citizens.
The project was inaugurated virtually by Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Bangladesh counterpart Sheikh Hasina, marking a milestone in regional connectivity and collaboration.
