Tripura’s emerging golf ecosystem is reshaping tourism, youth employment, and indigenous craft markets. With Bharat Golf Mahotsav and GFI Tour 2025, the state launches major infrastructure upgrades to promote golf, boost eco-tourism and expand opportunities for young professionals.

Tripura’s rapidly expanding golf ecosystem is evolving into far more than a sporting initiative, with officials now asserting that it may substantially reshape the state’s employment structure, tourism dynamics and the global visibility of indigenous craftsmanship. As golf gains new ground in the northeastern state, policymakers believe the sport could unlock multiple professional pathways for young people, stimulate eco-tourism, and integrate traditional crafts into premium international markets.

The vision was highlighted prominently during the inauguration of the Bharat Golf Mahotsav by Tripura Chief Minister Dr Manik Saha at Shalbagan. The prestigious event is being organised by the Golf Federation of India (GFI) in partnership with the Border Security Force (BSF). The state is also hosting the Tripura Open, a major fixture under the GFI Tour 2025, currently underway at the BSF Tripura Frontier headquarters’ golf course in Salbagan near Agartala.

Speaking at the event, Dr Saha stressed that the state government is committed to long-term planning to establish golf as a mainstream sporting discipline in Tripura. He said that expanding golf infrastructure will not only build a new sporting identity for the state but will also help generate employment for the youth across multiple segments including sports management, hospitality services, event organization, turf maintenance, fitness training and tourism operations.

According to the Chief Minister, the construction of full-scale golf courses and the wider introduction of golf-related activities would significantly strengthen Tripura’s eco-tourism potential. He noted that the picturesque terrains and serene natural landscapes of Tripura offer compelling prospects for golf tourism, which is already thriving in several Indian states.

Inspector General (IG) Aloke Kumar Chakraborty of BSF Tripura Frontier echoed this optimism. He said Tripura’s natural landscape is fundamentally suitable for golf and offers an environment that can support year-round sporting activities. Citing national trends, he pointed out that the establishment of golf courses in various Indian cities has led to notable spikes in real estate value, highlighting the sport’s indirect economic impact.

Chakraborty emphasised that as golf is internationally recognized as a premium tourism activity, its expansion in Tripura could elevate the state’s hospitality sector, encourage improvements in transportation facilities and create new avenues for indigenous handicraft markets to reach high-value global customers. With golf tournaments drawing participants, officials and spectators from different regions, the demand for local products, culture and cuisine is also expected to rise.

Bharat Golf Mahotsav: A Nationwide Celebration

Aryavir Arya, General Secretary of the Golf Federation of India, spoke about the larger national significance of the Bharat Golf Mahotsav. The event began on September 17, coinciding with the birthday of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and it will conclude on January 12, commemorating the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda.

Arya explained that the Bharat Golf Mahotsav is a nationwide campaign covering 100 cities, focusing on themes of unity, sustainability, education and social welfare. Activities under the event include professional golf tournaments, tree plantation drives, marathons, and initiatives aligned with ‘Make in India’ and ‘Viksit Bharat’.

Leaders React: Boost for Sporting Culture

In a social media post, Dr Saha expressed pride that Tripura was chosen as one of the hosts for the prestigious GFI Tour 2025 events. He remarked that organising such an impressive tournament enriches Tripura’s sporting environment and motivates young people to adopt the grace, discipline and competitive spirit associated with golf. He noted that this exposure would help expand the popularity of the sport across the state.

Sports Minister Tinku Roy also praised the initiative, stating that the Tripura Open has elevated the state’s sports culture while encouraging the youth to consider golf as a promising competitive sport.

Adding to the momentous occasion, BSF Tripura announced that it had successfully hosted the state’s first-ever national golf tournament, terming it a landmark achievement for Tripura’s sporting and tourism sectors.
