Tripura LoP Jitendra Chaudhury calls BJP–Tipra Motha power tussle “manufactured,” alleging corruption, misuse of authority, relief fund irregularities, and growing inequality under the ruling alliance while urging transparency, accountability, and public unity against misrule.
Leader of Opposition in the Tripura Assembly and CPI(M) Politburo member Jitendra Chaudhury on Wednesday alleged that the much-publicised “power tussle” between ruling allies—the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Tipra Motha—was a carefully manufactured narrative designed to divert public attention from what he described as widespread deprivation, corruption, and governance failures in the state.
Addressing a party rally at Belonia in South Tripura district, Chaudhury launched a scathing attack on the ruling dispensation, claiming that the common people of Tripura had seen little improvement in their lives over the past seven years. Instead, he alleged, a small and influential section had accumulated disproportionate wealth, creating visible social and economic disparities across both rural and urban regions.
According to the CPI(M) leader, the rapid enrichment of select individuals has become evident at the grassroots level. “Wherever one travels in the state—be it a panchayat, a village, or an urban locality—it is clear that only a few people have suddenly become wealthy. Their financial status has changed dramatically within a very short span of time,” Chaudhury alleged, asserting that this trend raises serious questions about transparency and accountability in governance.
He further claimed that the ostentatious display of wealth among ruling party functionaries had become a striking symbol of what he termed as “unchecked enrichment.” Referring to the increasing presence of high-end sports utility vehicles, Chaudhury alleged that certain premium vehicle models had become a common sight among leaders associated with the ruling establishment. Such displays, he said, stood in sharp contrast to the economic hardships faced by ordinary citizens.
Chaudhury also made serious allegations regarding the selective application of law enforcement. He claimed that vehicles bearing ruling party flags often enjoyed immunity at checkpoints and were allowed to pass without routine inspection. “In many instances, these vehicles are not stopped at all. This kind of protection creates a sense of impunity and encourages misuse of power,” he alleged. According to him, such practices undermine the rule of law and erode public trust in state institutions.
The Leader of Opposition went on to allege that some ruling party leaders had benefited from unfair electoral practices and the misuse of official authority. While he did not name individuals, Chaudhury insisted that these alleged actions had distorted democratic processes and weakened accountability mechanisms in the state.
Turning to disaster management, Chaudhury accused the government of failing flood-affected communities by allowing irregularities in the distribution and utilisation of relief funds. He claimed that resources meant for victims of recent floods had been misappropriated by a section of ruling party supporters. These allegations, he said, reflected a broader pattern of misgovernance. The state government, however, has repeatedly denied such claims and maintained that relief operations were conducted transparently and in accordance with established norms.
Addressing the reported tensions between BJP and Tipra Motha, Chaudhury argued that the public display of discord within the ruling alliance was misleading. While clashes and attacks on opposition workers allegedly continued on the ground, he said the ruling parties were projecting internal conflict as a distraction. “Leaders of the two parties are publicly challenging each other, but this is only to divert attention from real issues. They know very well that breaking the alliance will have serious political consequences,” he asserted.
Chaudhury further claimed that despite the rhetoric and public posturing, the alliance between BJP and Tipra Motha would remain intact. “They may quarrel in public and issue strong statements, but they will not part ways,” he said, suggesting that political compulsions would ultimately keep the alliance together.
Concluding his address, the CPI(M) leader reiterated his party’s demand for transparency, accountability, and good governance. He urged people across Tripura to unite against what he described as corruption, misuse of power, and misrule. Chaudhury called on citizens to remain vigilant and resist attempts to divert attention from core issues such as unemployment, price rise, and equitable development.
