Tripura has achieved an impressive immunisation coverage rate of over 95% for the year 2023-24, surpassing the national average of 93.50%, as reported in the Rajya Sabha by the Minister of State for Health, Prataprao Jadhav. This significant accomplishment places Tripura among the top-performing states in India for immunisation efforts.
Apart from Tripura, Meghalaya also featured among the top-performing northeastern states. The states of West Bengal, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Jharkhand, Gujarat, Chandigarh, and Chhattisgarh similarly achieved immunisation rates exceeding 95% during the same period.
The national full immunisation coverage for 2023-24 stood at 93.50%, with Lakshadweep and Jammu and Kashmir leading the rankings. Lakshadweep achieved an exceptional coverage of 108.79%, closely followed by Jammu and Kashmir at 108.66%. Other states with coverage surpassing 100% included Telangana (106.13%), Delhi (105.03%), Andhra Pradesh (101.26%), Mizoram (101.10%), and Maharashtra (101.04%). These extraordinary figures were attributed to enhanced coverage through catch-up campaigns such as Intensified Mission Indradhanush and the immunisation of migrant populations.
Minister Jadhav elaborated that Mission Indradhanush and its intensified version were special catch-up campaigns conducted periodically to ensure the vaccination of left-out and dropped-out children and pregnant women, particularly in areas with low immunisation coverage.
On the other hand, the lowest coverage was reported in Dadra and Nagar Haveli and Daman and Diu, with a figure of 48.03%.
Under the Universal Immunisation Programme, all eligible children up to the age of two are administered vaccination doses according to the immunisation schedule. The government actively encourages states and Union Territories to establish model immunisation centres and conducts need-based immunisation camps to further enhance coverage.
