Tripura Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury accuses the previous government of neglecting tourism, unveiling ₹4.50 crore upgrades to Bharat-Bangla Maitri Park. Plans include cottages, night stays, and tourist guides to boost arrivals. The state aims to transform Tripura into a premier destination under PM Modi’s “Viksit Bharat” vision.
Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Tuesday asserted that the previous state government had failed to prioritize the tourism sector, resulting in missed opportunities for growth. He stated that under the leadership of Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Tripura is now working toward transforming itself into a leading tourist destination in line with the “Viksit Bharat” vision by 2047.
Speaking after inaugurating the construction and development of tourism infrastructure at the historic Bharat-Bangla Maitri Park in Chottakhola, Chowdhury criticized the former administration for returning central funds meant for tourism development multiple times. “Tourism is a sector where better infrastructure draws more visitors, and we are moving in that direction with determination,” he said.
The Bharat-Bangla Maitri Park, spread over 120 acres, commemorates the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation War and pays homage to the martyrs. Chowdhury highlighted that the present government has given the park a fresh look, investing ₹4.50 crore to build modern infrastructure and enhance visitor facilities.
Plans for Night Stays and Tourist-Friendly Services
In a significant announcement, the minister revealed that the Tourism Department is considering the construction of cottages and log huts at Chottakhola Park to enable visitors to stay overnight. “This will encourage longer stays, boost local businesses, and provide a more immersive experience for both domestic and international tourists,” he noted.

The minister also emphasized that international tourist arrivals in Tripura have increased over the past year, reflecting the success of the government’s promotional efforts. To further improve visitor experiences, the state plans to recruit trained tourist guides who can assist travelers with information, navigation, and cultural insights.
Two-Pronged Approach to Tourism Growth
Chowdhury outlined the state’s dual strategy for tourism development: creating new tourist attractions while modernizing and upgrading existing sites. This approach, he explained, is designed to expand Tripura’s tourism offerings and meet global standards.
The Bharat-Bangla Maitri Park is seen as a key element in this plan. Its historic significance, coupled with upgraded facilities, is expected to draw both domestic travelers and visitors from Bangladesh. The location is not only a site of historical remembrance but also a scenic destination surrounded by natural beauty.
Event Attended by Key Dignitaries
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Cooperation Minister Shukla Charan Noatia, CPM MLA Dipankar Sen, Tourism Secretary U.K. Chakma, and South Tripura District Magistrate Md. Sajad. MLA Swapna Majumder, whose birthday coincided with the event, received warm greetings from the minister on stage.

Chowdhury reiterated that tourism is a vital driver of economic growth, capable of generating employment and promoting cultural exchange. He assured that the current administration is committed to leveraging this potential to position Tripura as a prime travel destination in Northeast India.
With new projects, upgraded amenities, and stronger marketing strategies, the state government aims to make Tripura not just a stopover but a must-visit location for both national and international travelers.
