In a humanitarian gesture, five Bangladeshi nationals who had inadvertently entered Tripura due to their mentally challenged condition were deported back to their country on Friday.

Before they were sent back, all of them underwent treatment at Tripura government run Modern Psychiatric hospital located in the peripheries of Agartala city.

A total of three female and two male patients reunited with their families who were apprehended by security forces in 2018 and 2015 respectively.

According to Bangladesh Assistant High Commissioner Arif Mohammad, as soon as they were informed about the patients they cross checked the information with the Bangladesh government that followed exchange of letters between both the countries and finally the reunion took place.

“We are very happy and I extend my sincere thanks to the Tripura government and government of India for making this happen. At the initial stage, the patients have no idea about their whereabouts. After receiving prolonged treatment they now can recognize their family members”, said Mohammad.

He said, in the last three years 15 such patients had been deported to Bangladesh successfully.

State programme officer state mental health mission Dr Udayan Majumder said, “today five patients have been successfully repatriated and there are ten to fifteen more patients who will be sent back if the necessary approvals are granted”.
