Improved police–public relations in Tripura have led to a 10% drop in crime and road accident fatalities, says DGP Anurag, highlighting strengthened NDPS enforcement, community policing, road safety awareness, and social outreach initiatives across the state.

Improved coordination and trust between the police and the public have resulted in a significant decline in crime and road traffic accident fatalities in Tripura, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag said on Friday. He announced that the state has recorded a 10 percent reduction in overall crime compared to the previous year, highlighting the effectiveness of community-centric policing.

Speaking at a public outreach programme organised at RK Pur Police Station in Udaipur, the DGP emphasised that public participation has become a crucial pillar in maintaining law and order. According to him, stronger police–civilian relations have not only helped in crime prevention but have also enhanced crime detection and post-incident investigation.

“Tripura Police have three major responsibilities. First is maintaining law and order, second is preventing crime, and third is detecting crime after it occurs. To achieve these goals, community participation is essential,” Anurag said. He noted that the strong presence of civilians at the event reflected growing public trust in the police force.

As part of the programme, a mega blood donation camp was organised, where 60 civilians and 30 police personnel came forward to donate blood. The DGP described the initiative as a symbol of social responsibility and mutual cooperation between the police and the public.

Addressing crime statistics, Anurag clarified that although certain categories of cases have shown an increase, they primarily relate to narcotics offences under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act. “The rise in NDPS cases indicates that preventive and enforcement measures against drug trafficking have been intensified over the past year,” he explained.

The DGP also highlighted a notable improvement in road safety across the state. According to official data, fatalities caused by road traffic accidents have dropped by more than 10 percent compared to last year. Road safety, he said, has been identified as a priority area for the Tripura Police.

“We have conducted extensive public awareness campaigns in schools, marketplaces, and public spaces to educate citizens about road safety and responsible driving,” Anurag said. He added that these initiatives have played a vital role in reducing deaths caused by road rage and traffic violations.

In addition to law enforcement activities, the DGP participated in a blanket distribution programme at a local orphanage in Udaipur. He expressed optimism about the future of the children residing there, stating that they would grow into responsible and contributing members of society.

The event underscored Tripura Police’s broader approach to policing, combining enforcement with social outreach, community engagement, and preventive action to ensure public safety and social well-being.
