Tripura achieves a green energy milestone under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, generating over 4 MW through rooftop solar installations. Over 1,200 homes benefit, with citizens earning from surplus power sales and promoting a sustainable future.
Tripura has achieved a significant milestone in its clean energy journey under the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, with rooftop solar installations across the state collectively generating more than 4 megawatts (MW) of electricity. This remarkable achievement highlights the growing acceptance of renewable energy in households and demonstrates the success of government initiatives aimed at making India energy self-reliant.
According to the state’s power department, a total of 16,965 households in Tripura have registered under the ambitious rooftop solar scheme. Out of these, solar panels have already been installed in 1,210 homes, each contributing to the state’s collective renewable power generation. The 4 MW output marks a major leap forward for Tripura, reflecting both administrative efficiency and public enthusiasm toward adopting solar energy.
Empowering Citizens Through Solar Energy
The Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, launched by the Government of India, aims to promote the use of solar power at the household level by providing subsidies for rooftop installations. The scheme’s vision is to enable every citizen to generate their own electricity, reduce dependence on conventional energy sources, and contribute to the national goal of achieving net-zero emissions by 2070.
In Tripura, the initiative has not only helped in reducing electricity bills but has also turned many citizens into micro power producers. Several households are now earning income by selling surplus energy to the power grid, creating a new model of self-sustaining, eco-friendly living.
Earning from the Sun: Financial Benefits to Consumers
What makes this achievement even more impressive is the direct financial benefit being realized by participants. So far, 187 consumers have sold their excess solar power worth ₹53,514, which has been directly credited to their bank accounts by the power utility.
This “earn while you generate” model has become a source of motivation for others to join the program. By monetizing surplus energy, households are not only ensuring energy independence but also gaining an additional source of income — all while contributing to environmental preservation.
A Sustainable Future for Tripura
Tripura’s progress in solar energy adoption is a testament to the state government’s proactive approach in implementing the central scheme. With growing awareness and financial incentives, the response from citizens has been overwhelmingly positive.
Officials from the Tripura Renewable Energy Development Agency (TREDA) emphasized that the state aims to expand rooftop solar installations in both urban and rural areas. Continuous awareness drives, simplified registration processes, and easy financing options have made solar technology accessible to middle-class and rural families alike.
Environmental experts have also hailed this initiative as a crucial step toward reducing carbon emissions and enhancing local energy security. With the successful implementation of the Pradhan Mantri Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, Tripura is gradually transforming sunlight into a sustainable economic asset.
National Context: Aligning with India’s Green Goals
At the national level, the government’s focus on promoting renewable energy has gained momentum, with the rooftop solar mission serving as a key pillar. The Union government provides up to 40% subsidy for residential rooftop solar systems, making clean energy adoption both affordable and attractive.
India’s goal of achieving 500 GW of renewable energy capacity by 2030 depends significantly on such decentralized power generation models. States like Tripura, despite their smaller size and geographical challenges, are setting examples of how regional participation can make a national difference.
From Sunlight to Savings: A Bright Path Ahead
What was once viewed merely as sunlight is now powering homes, energizing livelihoods, and creating a more sustainable future for Tripura’s citizens. The success of the Free Solar Power Scheme demonstrates how innovation, government support, and public participation can together pave the way toward a cleaner and more prosperous India.

With continued public involvement and policy support, the state’s renewable energy capacity is expected to rise steadily in the coming years. As more households come under the ambit of rooftop solar energy, Tripura’s transformation from energy consumer to energy contributor stands as a shining example of green progress in India’s Northeast.
