Tripura crosses 140 start-ups under new policy expanding beyond IT into bamboo, renewable energy, and deep tech sectors, boosting innovation, employment, and investment opportunities while strengthening the state’s emerging entrepreneurial ecosystem through government support initiatives.

Tripura’s start-up ecosystem is witnessing a significant transformation as the total number of registered ventures in the state has surpassed the 140 mark, driven by a progressive policy shift and expanding sectoral opportunities, a senior official confirmed.

According to Jeya Ragul Geshan, Director of the Information Technology Department and head of StartUp Tripura, the newly adopted start-up policy has played a crucial role in broadening the horizon for entrepreneurs. Unlike the previous framework, which primarily focused on IT and IT-enabled services, the revised policy has opened doors to a diverse range of sectors including bamboo, civil infrastructure, deep technology, solar, and renewable energy.

“This diversification has encouraged many innovators to come forward with unique and practical business ideas,” Geshan stated. He added that the policy aims to create a more inclusive entrepreneurial environment that accommodates both tech-driven and traditional industries with modern applications.

On March 30, the IT Department organized an interactive session with start-up founders across Tripura to better understand their challenges and expectations from the government. The session, chaired by Geshan, served as a collaborative platform where entrepreneurs openly discussed issues related to funding, incubation, innovation support, and market access.

Officials noted that such engagements are essential to strengthen the state’s start-up ecosystem by bridging the gap between policymakers and entrepreneurs. “The dialogue allowed founders to share their experiences and offer insights into how the government can provide more targeted assistance,” an official statement said.

Providing a detailed breakdown of the current scenario, Geshan revealed that around 100 new start-ups have recently approached the department. Of these, nearly 50 have been formally recognized following screening processes, while approximately 20 have received the necessary operational clearances.

In addition, more than 100 start-ups in Tripura are now registered with the Department for Promotion of Industry and Internal Trade (DPIIT), reflecting the growing credibility of the ecosystem. These ventures have already generated employment opportunities for around 200 individuals, contributing to the state’s economic development.

The government’s focus on policy support, sectoral expansion, and continuous engagement with entrepreneurs is expected to further accelerate start-up growth in Tripura. Officials believe that with sustained efforts, the state could emerge as a promising hub for innovation in Northeast India.
