Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya in Kailashahar faces a severe staff shortage as professors are deputed to Tripura University and guest lecturer contracts lapse, halting academic activities for three days and leaving students to return home without classes or guidance.

Academic life at Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya, Kailashahar, has come to a grinding halt for the past three days due to a severe staff shortage that has disrupted all teaching activities. Students who arrive daily for classes are being forced to return home without attending even a single lecture — a situation that has sparked concern across the academic community.

According to reports, the crisis stems from the Department of Higher Education’s directive that required all professors, including the principal, to be deputed to Tripura University for the evaluation of answer scripts. This move has left the college with only one available faculty member, rendering normal teaching schedules impossible to maintain.

Guest Lecturers’ Contracts Expire, No Renewal Yet

The problem has been compounded by the expiration of guest lecturers’ contracts in September. Despite the lapse, no new appointments or contract renewals have been made, leading guest lecturers to stop attending college altogether. With only one full-time teacher on duty, it has become unmanageable to cover multiple departments or conduct regular classes.

As a result, students—many of whom travel from distant villages and spend money daily on transportation—are growing increasingly frustrated. “We come to college every morning, hoping for classes, but most days we just return home. It feels like our education has come to a standstill,” said a second-year student from the Political Science department.

Empty Classrooms, Locked Departments

On Saturday, the college opened at its regular time of 9:00 AM, but only a few Education department classes were conducted till 12:30 PM. Departments such as Economics, Political Science, Sanskrit, Philosophy, and History remained shut, with classrooms locked and corridors deserted.
Students could be seen waiting outside classrooms, uncertain whether lectures would resume or not. The atmosphere on campus reflected a growing sense of helplessness and discontent.

Administrative Work Also Hit

The absence of the college principal has created additional challenges in managing administrative affairs. Several official matters, including student documentation, fee-related issues, and internal academic coordination, have reportedly stalled. Staff members expressed concern that the prolonged administrative paralysis could further delay the smooth functioning of the institution once classes resume.

A non-teaching staff member, speaking anonymously, said, “The entire administration is in limbo. With the principal and senior faculty away, even basic academic and clerical tasks are pending. The college feels deserted.”

Students’ Plight Ignored, No Protest Yet

Despite the severe disruption, neither the ruling student body nor the opposition student organizations have initiated any form of protest. Their silence has surprised many, given the scale of inconvenience faced by hundreds of students.

Education observers say the incident exposes deeper issues in Tripura’s higher education system, especially regarding staffing management and coordination between universities and affiliated colleges. “Sending all teachers away simultaneously for evaluation work without ensuring replacements is a serious administrative failure,” commented a retired academic from the region.

Calls for Urgent Intervention

Parents and students are now urging the Department of Higher Education to immediately address the issue. Many are demanding that either the professors be recalled or temporary guest lecturers be reappointed to restore normalcy. Without swift action, the ongoing disruption could lead to severe academic losses, especially for final-year students preparing for upcoming examinations.

As of now, there has been no official statement from the Higher Education Department or Tripura University regarding when faculty members are expected to return. Until then, Ramkrishna Mahavidyalaya remains effectively paralyzed, its classrooms silent and its students disheartened.
