Tripura CM Proposes Expansion of MBB University, Considers Merger with Historic MBB College
In a key step toward strengthening Tripura’s higher education ecosystem, Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha on Thursday announced the government’s proposal to affiliate three new Government Degree Colleges — situated in Ambassa, Kakraban, and Karbook — with Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBBU). The announcement marks a significant stride in decentralizing access to higher education and improving academic infrastructure across the state.

Dr. Saha made the announcement while addressing the first-ever Convocation Ceremony of MBB University, held at Rabindra Shatabarshiki Bhavan in Agartala. The event was attended by Tripura Governor Indrasena Reddy Nallu and other dignitaries, where the university conferred an Honorary Doctorate (Doctor of Letters) on Justice T. Amarnath Goud .
Plan to Merge MBB College with the University
In one of the most significant proposals of the day, the Chief Minister revealed that the state government is considering the possibility of merging the historic Maharaja Bir Bikram College (MBB College) with MBB University. This integration, he explained, would allow for the development of a unified academic campus with expanded facilities and centralized administration, ultimately benefitting students and faculty alike.
“The entire premises of MBB College will be required to develop the infrastructure needed to sustain and grow MBB University, ensuring a campus environment befitting a full-fledged university,” said Dr. Saha. “There should be no conflict in such a merger as both the college and the university are named after Maharaja Bir Bikram. We will examine every aspect carefully before taking a final decision.”
This proposal has sparked discussions among academic circles and is expected to undergo thorough consultation with stakeholders, including faculty, students, and education planners.

Graduation Milestones and Academic Achievements
Dr. Saha announced that since its inception, 9,642 students have successfully completed their Graduate, Postgraduate Degree, and Postgraduate Diploma courses from MBB University, including those enrolled through its affiliated colleges. Among them, 135 meritorious students were awarded gold medals for their outstanding academic performance in various disciplines.
“This is a proud moment for the university and a testament to the hard work of our students, faculty, and administrative staff,” said the Chief Minister, who also extended his personal congratulations to the graduating class.

Academic Expansion and New Courses
The Chief Minister further revealed that MBB University is preparing to launch several new courses in response to growing academic and industry demands. These include Bachelor of Business Administration (BBA), Master of Business Administration (MBA), Bachelor of Science (B.Sc), Master of Science (M.Sc), and a specialized M.Sc in Biotechnology.
“These courses will open new avenues for students in Tripura to pursue careers in emerging sectors,” he added, affirming the government’s commitment to enhancing employability through quality education.

Focus on Quality and Infrastructure
Dr. Saha stressed that the foundation of a strong education system lies in quality faculty, robust infrastructure, and an environment conducive to learning. “We are working to address existing gaps in our education system. Our vision is clear — quality teachers and modern facilities will create quality students. We want Tripura’s youth to compete not just regionally, but globally,” he said.
He also urged the students to uphold the values of respect, humility, and continuous learning as they step into the next phase of their lives.
Backgrounder: MBB College and MBB University
Maharaja Bir Bikram College, established in 1947 and named after Tripura’s last reigning monarch, Maharaja Bir Bikram Kishore Manikya Bahadur, is one of the oldest and most prestigious institutions in the state. It has long served as a cornerstone of higher education in Tripura and has produced generations of leaders, educators, and professionals.
Maharaja Bir Bikram University (MBBU) was established in 2015 as the first state university in Tripura. Located in Agartala, the university aims to provide higher education with a focus on academic excellence and inclusive growth. Since its formation, MBBU has rapidly expanded its academic offerings and affiliations, including several government degree colleges across the state.
The proposed merger of MBB College with MBB University, if implemented, would represent a historic consolidation of educational heritage with modern academic governance — blending legacy with innovation for a stronger future.
