Tripura CM Manik Saha visits bereaved family after tragic elephant attack death, assures financial aid and government support, announces SDRF compensation, and expresses condolences while highlighting human-wildlife conflict concerns in rural areas.

In a heartfelt gesture of solidarity and compassion, Manik Saha, the Chief Minister of Tripura, visited the grieving family of Manimala Debbarma, a 70-year-old woman who tragically lost her life in a wild elephant attack late last night. The incident occurred in Ramakrishnapur ADC Village under Mungiakami Block, sending shockwaves through the local community.

Before heading to an election rally in Chakmaghat, the Chief Minister made a deliberate stop at the victim’s residence to personally assess the situation and extend his condolences. The emotional scene unfolded as family members and relatives broke down in tears upon his arrival, reflecting the deep sorrow caused by the sudden and violent loss.

Describing the incident as “very unfortunate,” Dr. Saha expressed his grief and concern over the rising instances of human-wildlife conflict in rural regions. “I have come here to see the situation personally. Whatever assistance is possible from our end will be provided. As per the rules, help from the State Government will be arranged,” he assured the bereaved family.

The Chief Minister conveyed his deepest sympathies and emphasized that the state government stands firmly with the affected family during this difficult time. His visit was seen not only as a gesture of empathy but also as a reaffirmation of the government’s commitment to supporting citizens in times of crisis.

In an immediate relief measure, the family was provided financial assistance of ₹4 lakh from the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) through the subdivision administration. Additionally, the Forest Department extended ₹1 lakh as supplementary aid, recognizing the severity of the incident and the need for prompt support.

Officials stated that the compensation aligns with existing government norms for victims of wildlife-related fatalities. However, the tragic death has once again brought attention to the growing challenge of human-elephant conflict in forest-adjacent areas of the state.

Accompanying the Chief Minister during the visit was Sambit Patra, along with other party leaders and administrative officials. Their presence underscored the seriousness with which the government is treating the incident.

In a statement, Dr. Saha reiterated his condolences, saying he had met the bereaved family and prayed for the eternal peace of the departed soul. He also acknowledged the vulnerability of rural communities living close to forest areas and hinted at the need for stronger preventive measures to mitigate such tragedies in the future.

The death of Manimala Debbarma, described as a “Janajati mother,” has deeply affected the local population. Residents expressed concerns over increasing elephant movement in human settlements, urging authorities to take proactive steps such as improved surveillance, early warning systems, and better forest management.

This tragic incident highlights the urgent need for coordinated efforts between forest officials, local administrations, and communities to address the risks posed by wildlife encounters. While compensation provides immediate relief, long-term solutions remain essential to prevent further loss of life.
