Tripura Charts Power Vision for 2034-35: High-Level Meeting in Agartala Focuses on Power Infrastructure Overhaul

A high-level strategic meeting was held on Tuesday at Pragya Bhavan in Agartala to deliberate on the future of Tripura’s power transmission infrastructure. The core agenda of the meeting was to assess and chart out a comprehensive plan for upgrading the state’s internal electricity transmission capacity and infrastructure by the fiscal year 2034-35. The meeting was chaired by  Ghanshyam Prasad, Chairman of the Central Electricity Authority (CEA), under the Ministry of Power, Government of India.

The consultation saw the presence of key stakeholders from both central and state agencies. Representing the Government of Tripura were Abhishek Singh, Secretary of the Power Department;  Biswajit Bose, Managing Director of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited (TSECL);  Sarvajit Singh Dogra, Director (Finance) of TSECL; Ranjan Debbarma, General Manager of Tripura Power Transmission Limited (TPTL);  Swapan Debbarma, General Manager of Tripura State Electricity Corporation Limited; and  Hare Krishna Das, General Manager of Tripura Power Generation Limited (TPGL).

From the central bodies, the meeting included the participation of B.S. Bairwa, Chief Engineer of the Central Electricity Authority, as well as senior engineers and officials from organizations such as Central Transmission Utility of India Limited (CTUIL), North Eastern Regional Power Committee (NERPC), North Eastern Regional Load Despatch Centre (NERLDC), Power Grid Corporation of India Limited (PGCIL), and other technocrats from CEA, TPTL, TSECL, and TPGL.

A Decade-Long Roadmap in the Making

The meeting was convened at a critical juncture as Tripura anticipates a sharp rise in power demand over the next decade. With the increasing industrialization, rural electrification efforts, and urban expansion, the state’s power infrastructure is under pressure to scale accordingly. The discussion focused on evaluating the readiness of the existing infrastructure to accommodate future demand and identifying key gaps in generation, transmission, and distribution.

Experts deliberated on the need for a resilient, reliable, and sustainable power ecosystem in Tripura. According to officials, the roadmap aims to support the state’s ambition of achieving power security by 2034-35. Topics ranged from technical upgrades in transmission lines and substations to financial planning, inter-agency coordination, and alignment with the national grid.

One of the significant goals of the meeting was to initiate a collaborative blueprint between the Central Electricity Authority and Tripura’s power sector agencies. This joint roadmap will serve as a foundational document to drive investment, policy interventions, and technological modernization in the power sector.

Central-State Synergy in Action

The Tripura Power Department extended its heartfelt gratitude to the Central Electricity Authority for its continued guidance and support in facilitating the state’s energy ambitions. Officials acknowledged the central agencies’ role in bringing together national-level expertise and helping shape state-level strategies.

In a ceremonial gesture reflecting Tripura’s rich cultural heritage, the visiting dignitaries were warmly welcomed to the sacred land of Tripurasundari, the state’s revered deity. The government emphasized that traditional values and modern development go hand in hand in Tripura’s growth journey.

Laying the Foundation for Sustainable Power Growth

Officials from TSECL and other power corporations expressed optimism that the strategic consultation will pave the way for a transformative phase in Tripura’s power sector. “This meeting marks the beginning of a new chapter. It brings clarity, collaboration, and commitment to building a future-ready power infrastructure in Tripura,” said a senior TSECL official after the meeting.

With plans to enhance both intra-state and inter-state connectivity, the state is also aiming to become a power-exporting hub within the Northeast. The long-term vision includes integrating renewable energy sources, digitizing grid operations, and improving consumer delivery systems.

Background: Tripura’s Evolving Power Sector

Tripura has made commendable progress in the power sector over the past decade. From reducing transmission losses to improving village electrification, the state has benefited from centrally sponsored schemes like Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Gram Jyoti Yojana (DDUGJY), Integrated Power Development Scheme (IPDS), and Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS).

However, challenges remain in terms of aging infrastructure, geographical constraints, and the need for skilled manpower. With Northeast India receiving renewed attention under the Act East Policy, states like Tripura are strategically positioning themselves as energy gateways for both national and international energy trade with neighboring Bangladesh and Southeast Asia.

The outcome of Tuesday’s meeting is expected to feed directly into a draft strategy paper that will guide implementation plans, fund allocation, and project prioritization in the months to come.

As Tripura gears up for a decade of growth, energy security and sustainable infrastructure will remain central to its development narrative. The collaboration between state and central agencies showcased in this meeting could become a model for integrated planning across the northeastern region.
