Tripura government approves pre-primary units in 450 schools from 2026–27, aiming to strengthen early childhood education, boost enrolment, and expand foundational learning infrastructure across districts under Directorate of Elementary Education and Samagra Shiksha framework.

In a major push to strengthen early childhood education, the Directorate of Elementary Education under the Tripura government has approved the establishment of pre-primary units in 450 government schools across the state from the academic session 2026–27.

According to an official memorandum, the decision follows detailed feasibility reports submitted by District Education Officers (DEOs), identifying schools suitable for introducing nursery-level education. The selected institutions have been listed district-wise in Annexure-A of the directive, ensuring systematic implementation across regions.

Officials said the move is aimed at expanding access to foundational education and aligning with national priorities for strengthening early learning outcomes. By integrating pre-primary classes within existing government schools, the initiative is expected to improve enrolment at the grassroots level and ensure a smoother transition into formal schooling.

All DEOs have been instructed to take immediate steps to operationalise the pre-primary units in line with departmental guidelines. They have also been directed to provide necessary administrative and logistical support to ensure that nursery classes begin smoothly from the upcoming academic session.

The memorandum further emphasised the importance of real-time monitoring and data management. DEOs will oversee the current status of the identified schools and ensure that updated enrolment data is uploaded on the UDISE+ portal. This step is considered crucial for securing financial assistance and maintaining transparency in implementation.

School authorities—including headmasters, principals, and teachers—have been asked to actively coordinate with School Management Committees (SMCs), parents, and local bodies. The focus will be on raising awareness about the new pre-primary units and streamlining the admission process to ensure maximum participation.

The initiative also highlights a collaborative governance approach. Institutions facing challenges during implementation have been advised to contact their respective DEOs, who will assess ground-level feasibility and take appropriate decisions to resolve issues promptly.

The directive has been circulated among key educational bodies, including the State Council of Educational Research and Training and Samagra Shiksha, along with district-level authorities, for coordinated execution.

Education experts believe that the introduction of pre-primary units in government schools will significantly strengthen foundational literacy and numeracy in the state. The initiative is also expected to reduce dependency on private institutions for early education, making quality learning more accessible and affordable.

With this move, Tripura joins a growing number of states prioritising early childhood care and education as a cornerstone for long-term academic success.
