Tripura Assembly witnesses Opposition walkout over Private University Bill, raising serious concerns over credibility, student future, and alleged tainted institutions. Congress and CPIM protest government’s push for multiple private universities during the ongoing budget session.

In a dramatic turn of events during the ongoing budget session of the Tripura Legislative Assembly, Opposition parties staged a strong protest against the state government’s continued push for private universities. Legislators from both the Congress and the CPIM walked out of the House on Monday, voicing serious objections to the introduction of yet another Private University Bill.

The latest Bill, which proposes the establishment of the Dhanvantari Skill University, was tabled shortly after the post-lunch session resumed. This marks the fourth such Bill introduced during the current session, intensifying tensions between the treasury and opposition benches.

The Opposition leaders criticized the government’s persistence in clearing multiple private university proposals despite repeated objections. Earlier on March 20, three similar Bills were passed by the ruling bench, even as the Opposition staged a walkout in protest. Despite their resistance, those Bills were approved, further deepening concerns among Opposition members.

Leader of the Opposition, Jitendra Chaudhury, launched a sharp attack on the government’s decision, alleging that several institutions behind these proposals have questionable track records. He warned that allowing such entities to operate universities in the state could severely harm the future of students.

“The government has already passed three Bills, and now another one is being introduced. We strongly oppose this move. Institutions with a history of cheating students should not be permitted to run universities. Many of these organizations are either blacklisted or carry a tainted past. If they are allowed to function here, it will jeopardize the future of our youth,” Chaudhury said.

Echoing similar concerns, a senior Congress MLA argued that the government should prioritize local educationists and credible institutions instead of opening doors to external private entities. He emphasized that encouraging local participation would not only boost the state’s education ecosystem but also support the growth of a genuine startup culture.

The MLA further highlighted the growing issue of private colleges offering professional courses at high costs without ensuring quality education or employability. “Many private institutions charge hefty fees, but their degrees hold little value in the job market. This trend is alarming and needs immediate attention,” he added.

The repeated introduction of private university Bills has sparked a broader debate on the quality, regulation, and accountability of private higher education in Tripura. While the government maintains that such initiatives will expand educational opportunities and attract investment, the Opposition remains unconvinced.

With the standoff showing no signs of easing, the issue is expected to dominate discussions in the remaining days of the budget session. The ongoing conflict underscores the urgent need for a balanced approach that ensures both expansion and quality in higher education.
