Tripura records its lowest crime rate in 20 years in 2025, with major reductions in murders, property crimes, crimes against women, and road accidents. DGP Anurag highlights improved law and order, traffic safety, and strong anti-narcotics action.

Tripura has achieved a major milestone in law enforcement by recording its lowest overall crime rate in the last 20 years, alongside a significant reduction in road traffic accidents, Director General of Police (DGP) Anurag announced on Thursday.

Addressing a press conference at the Police Headquarters, the DGP described 2025 as one of the most successful years for policing in the state over the past two decades, marked by sustained improvements in public safety, crime control, and traffic management.

According to official police data, Tripura registered a total of 3,698 crime cases in 2025, reflecting a decline of 8.3 per cent compared to 4,033 cases in 2024. The reduction was evident across almost all major categories of crime, indicating improved law and order conditions and effective policing strategies across urban and rural areas.

Property-related crimes such as dacoity, robbery, burglary, and theft witnessed a sharp decline of 16.04 per cent. In 2025, only 293 such cases were reported compared to 349 cases in the previous year. The DGP attributed this improvement to enhanced night patrolling, intelligence-based operations, and increased community policing initiatives.

Crimes involving loss of life and physical violence also showed a notable decrease. Murder cases fell by 18.10 per cent, with 95 cases reported in 2025 against 116 in 2024. Incidents of hurt and assault, often considered a key indicator of everyday public order, declined by 14.23 per cent from 815 cases in 2024 to 699 in 2025. Rioting-related cases dropped by 26 per cent, with only 17 cases recorded this year compared to 23 last year.

Crimes against women registered a reduction of 8.14 per cent. Police records show 665 cases were reported in 2025, down from 724 cases in 2024. The DGP said sustained monitoring, faster response mechanisms, women-focused police initiatives, and awareness campaigns played an important role in achieving this decline.

Road safety emerged as another major area of success for the state. Focused enforcement, strict implementation of traffic laws, and public awareness drives resulted in an 8.82 per cent reduction in road traffic accidents. A total of 520 accident cases were reported in 2025, compared to 575 in the previous year. Fatalities due to road accidents declined even more sharply, by 14.55 per cent, with 182 deaths recorded in 2025 against 213 in 2024.

Police analysis revealed that nearly 67 per cent of road accident deaths involved individuals aged between 18 and 45 years, described by the DGP as the most productive segment of society. He emphasized that road accidents represent a major social and economic loss, affecting families and the broader economy.

The number of fatal accident cases decreased from 365 in 2024 to 345 in 2025, while the number of injured persons declined from 622 to 606 during the same period. Despite an eight per cent increase in registered vehicles—from 8.11 lakh to 8.67 lakh—the state successfully reduced accident figures, highlighting the effectiveness of traffic management measures.

Comparing Tripura’s performance with national statistics, the DGP noted that the national average of road accidents per lakh population stood at 34.6 in 2023, while Tripura recorded only 13.9. This figure further declined to 12.5 in 2025. Accidents per 10,000 vehicles in Tripura stood at 8.5 against the national average of 11.4 in 2023 and were further reduced to 6 in 2025. The number of persons killed per lakh population in Tripura was 4.7, almost one-third of the national average of 12.5.

On narcotics enforcement, the DGP said cases under the NDPS Act increased by 11 per cent, with 522 cases registered in 2025 against 470 in 2024. This rise reflected intensified action rather than increased drug use. Seizures of dry ganja rose by 14 per cent, cough syrup bottles by 145 per cent, and yaba tablets by 26.37 per cent. The seizure of cannabis nurseries and plants increased by 95 per cent, with over 16 crore plants and saplings recovered. The total value of narcotics seized and destroyed surged from Rs 849 crore in 2024 to Rs 1,636 crore in 2025.

Traffic enforcement was significantly strengthened, with prosecution reports under motor vehicle laws increasing by 109 per cent. Cases rose from 55,696 in 2024 to 1,16,158 in 2025. Fine collection increased from Rs 19.1 crore to Rs 20.21 crore, while driving licence suspensions rose from 10,890 to 17,890. Prosecution related to gambling and petty offences also increased sharply as part of preventive action against habitual offenders.

On the security front, the DGP said all underground group members had abandoned violence and joined the mainstream. Attempts to revive militancy in North Tripura were successfully thwarted, with six arrests and seizure of explosives. Police also recovered 628 lost mobile phones, rescued 45 trafficked persons from Arunachal Pradesh, and recovered 20 kidnapped girls through inter-state coordination.

The conviction rate in Tripura currently stands at around 31 per cent, higher than several northeastern states. On illegal infiltration, 202 cases were registered, leading to the arrest of 578 persons, including 393 Bangladeshi nationals, 12 Rohingya migrants, and 120 border touts.
