Tripura records a major decline in Infant Mortality Rate to 12 in SRS Report 2024, outperforming the national average through improved maternal healthcare, immunisation coverage, institutional deliveries, and strengthened newborn care services under the state health mission.

A major improvement in healthcare indicators has been recorded in Tripura, with the state registering a sharp decline in the Infant Mortality Rate (IMR) according to the latest Sample Registration System (SRS) Bulletin 2024. The figures were shared by Chief Minister Manik Saha on Thursday, highlighting the progress made in maternal and child healthcare services across the northeastern state.

The SRS Bulletin 2024, released by the Registrar General of India in May 2026, placed Tripura’s Infant Mortality Rate at 12, significantly lower than the national average of 24. The report reflects steady progress in reducing infant deaths over the past three years and positions the state among the better-performing regions in terms of child healthcare outcomes.

According to the data cited by the Chief Minister, Tripura’s IMR has consistently declined from 17 in 2022 to 15 in 2023, before reaching 12 in 2024. In contrast, the national Infant Mortality Rate remained comparatively higher, standing at 26 in 2022, 25 in 2023, and 24 in 2024.

Health experts consider Infant Mortality Rate one of the most important indicators of a state’s healthcare performance, particularly in relation to maternal care, neonatal treatment, nutrition, immunisation, and access to medical services in rural and urban areas. A lower IMR indicates better healthcare delivery systems and improved survival rates among newborns and infants.

Chief Minister Manik Saha attributed the achievement to sustained government initiatives aimed at strengthening healthcare infrastructure and expanding public health services throughout the state. He stated that enhanced institutional deliveries, better immunisation coverage, and focused interventions at the community level contributed significantly to the reduction in infant deaths.

The government also strengthened Special Newborn Care Units (SNCU) and Newborn Stabilisation Units (NBSU) across hospitals and healthcare facilities, ensuring improved treatment and monitoring for newborns requiring critical medical attention. Increased awareness campaigns among families and frontline healthcare workers further supported maternal and child health programmes in remote areas.

The Chief Minister described the development as a major milestone for Tripura’s healthcare sector and reaffirmed the state government’s commitment to further improving public health infrastructure. He emphasized that special attention would continue to be given to mothers, infants, and rural healthcare delivery to maintain the positive trend in health indicators.

He also acknowledged the role of the Central government in supporting the state’s healthcare initiatives. Expressing gratitude to Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Health Minister J. P. Nadda, Dr. Saha said that assistance from the Centre had strengthened Tripura’s healthcare infrastructure and accelerated implementation of critical health programmes.

Officials from the health department described the reduction in Infant Mortality Rate as a reflection of improved neonatal care, stronger maternal health services, and better coordination between healthcare institutions and grassroots health workers. They believe continued investment in healthcare systems and awareness initiatives will help the state sustain further progress in the coming years.
