
The TRAI Regional Office Kolkata on Friday conducted a Consumer Outreach Programme (CoP) for the telecom and broadcasting service consumers of the Udaipur at Rajarshi Hall, Udaipur. Meenakshi Gupta, Member and acting Chairperson of TRAI attended the occasion as Chief Guest. Mahendra Srivastava, Principal Advisor (QoS, CA and IT) New Delhi, G G Shabong CCA Dept of Telecommunications, R K Soni, Dy Director General (DDG) and dignitaries of different fields were present in the event.
The consumer Outreach Programme was organized to educate customers regarding various initiatives taken by TRAI for safeguarding interest of the consumers and various regulatory provisions available for consumer protections. The programme was attended by different section of the local residents of Udaipur specially from students of local higher educational institutions, Members from nearby Gram panchayets, CSC-VLEs and women. It was also attended by officers of state government and representatives of all Telecom Service Providers including BSNL and various Consumer Advocacy Groups.
Dr. S K Samanta, Advisor TRAI Kolkata Office in his welcome address underlined that today’s programme was in furtherance to various initiatives taken by TRAI to generate awareness among telecom consumers about various regulatory provisions made available by TRAI for safeguarding consumer interests.
Srivastava principal advisor (QoS, CA and IT) delivered a talk on importance of providing quality service and various measures adopted by TRAI for ensuring the quality of service. He highlighted various technical developments taking place in communication arena and emphasized on the need for public participation in the process.
Meenaskshi Gupta acting chairperson TRAI, as chief guest delivered the keynote address and shared her thoughts about the role of Information and Telecommunication sector in the development of India and the important roles TRAI is playing in the development of telecommunication sector. She also mentioned that now the focus of TRAI will be for taking steps in bridging the digital divide and ensuring access of telecommunications services to different sections of the society.
G G Shabong, CCA North East-I Circle delivered a speech highlighting various projects being undertaken under USO fund for expansion of telecommunication network in North-East region. R K Soni, DDG, DoT briefed the audience about various USO-funded projects such as 4G saturation project, Bharatnet being undertaken by the Government of India for improving Telecom Network of the state.
Rajkumar, CGM NE-I circle, highlighted about various expansion projects being undertaken by BSNL for improving it’s network. Nilay Dutta, Senior Research Officer of TRAI Regional Office delivered a presentation showing various provisions under consumer protection regulation under TRAI and explained about the complaint redressal mechanism available to the customers for lodging and resolving any complaint related to service.
He also discussed about tower frauds taking place and underlined that TRAI, in no case is associated with activities related to acquisition of site for erection of Tower. Nirdesh Deb, Addl SP, Cybercrime Unit, Tripura delivered a presentation before the audience on prevalent instances of cyber related frauds and various precautions to be adopted by users to safeguard against these cybercrimes.
The programme was followed up with interactions with consumers regarding their issues with the service and sharing their experiences.
