The age-old tradition of pottery is facing a steady decline as modern materials like steel, aluminum, and plastic dominate the market. As a result, potters in Kumarghat subdivision’s Machmara village are struggling to sustain their livelihood.

For generations, clay pots, pitchers, and utensils were an integral part of households. However, with the rise of modern alternatives, the demand for earthenware has plummeted. This shift has left local potters, including Uttam Kumar Pal, in despair. “Pottery has been our family’s livelihood for centuries. But now, people no longer use clay utensils for daily needs. We are limited to making religious items for festivals,” he said.

Adding to their woes, potters face difficulties in sourcing suitable clay, which has led to increased production costs. “The price of clay items cannot compete with cheap plastic and steel products. As a result, people have almost abandoned earthenware,” Uttam added.

Having practiced pottery for nearly two decades, Uttam Kumar Pal is now struggling to support his family. He claims that neither he nor his fellow potters have received any government assistance. He urges the authorities to provide them with electric pottery machines to modernize production. “These machines are too expensive for us to afford, but if the government provides one, it would speed up the process and improve our situation,” he said.

Apart from pottery, Uttam also crafts cement sculptures. However, financial constraints prevent him from purchasing the necessary equipment, further hampering his work. He remains hopeful that government support can revive the industry, but uncertainty looms over whether authorities will address the plight of traditional potters.
