Tom Cruise sets a Guinness World Record for most burning parachute jumps during a fiery stunt in Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning. The daring feat, filmed in South Africa, showcases Cruise’s commitment to realism and cements his legacy as one of Hollywood’s most fearless action stars.
Hollywood icon Tom Cruise has once again proven he is not just an action star on screen but a real-life daredevil, setting a new Guinness World Record for a high-risk stunt in his latest film, Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning. The 61-year-old actor, already renowned for performing many of his own stunts throughout the Mission: Impossible franchise, achieved the record for “most burning parachute jumps by an individual”—a jaw-dropping 16 times during the filming of the movie.
The now-legendary stunt was shot high above the Drakensberg Mountains in South Africa. Cruise ascended more than 75,000 feet in a helicopter and leaped out with a parachute soaked in fuel and set ablaze. For each take, he plummeted through the sky, flames trailing behind him, before cutting himself loose midair and deploying a backup parachute to land safely.
Adding to the challenge, Cruise performed several jumps while wearing a snorri camera rig weighing over 22 kilograms (50 pounds), ensuring audiences would get an up-close and authentic view of the fiery descent. According to crew members and behind-the-scenes footage, Cruise rehearsed the stunt extensively, prioritizing safety while still pushing the boundaries of what is physically and visually possible on screen.
The feat was recognized by Guinness World Records, with Editor-in-Chief Craig Glenday saying, “Tom doesn’t just play action heroes – he is an action hero! A large part of his success can be chalked up to his absolute focus on authenticity and pushing the boundaries of what a leading man can do. It’s an honour to be able to recognize his utter fearlessness with this new Guinness World Records title.”
This accomplishment is just the latest chapter in Cruise’s storied career, which includes four Oscar nominations and decades of iconic performances. His commitment to practical effects and realism has helped redefine modern action cinema. Cruise, speaking modestly to the crew before the stunt, had said, “We’re gonna be real smart. I’m not saying be risky. We don’t take risks… obviously.”

Mission: Impossible: The Final Reckoning marks the eighth installment of the high-octane franchise and a direct follow-up to Dead Reckoning Part One. Directed by longtime collaborator Christopher McQuarrie, the film brings back familiar faces including Hayley Atwell, Ving Rhames, Simon Pegg, Henry Czerny, and Angela Bassett. The story centers on Ethan Hunt and the IMF team’s efforts to prevent a rogue artificial intelligence known as “the Entity” from triggering global catastrophe.
Filmed across various international locations including England, Malta, South Africa, and Norway, the movie stands as one of the 20 most expensive films ever produced. Cruise’s daring stunt, combined with the film’s global scale and narrative ambition, cements The Final Reckoning as a cinematic event that blurs the line between performance and real-life heroism.
