Tripura Achieves 3.2% Unemployment Rate as Government Focuses on Youth Employment
The Tripura government has made significant strides in tackling unemployment, reducing the state's unemployment rate to 3.2% in the 2023-24 fiscal year, claimed Social Welfare and Social Education Minister Tinku Roy during a discussion on a private motion in the Legislative Assembly on Friday.
The motion, introduced by opposition MLA Nayan Sarkar, urged the government to take special initiatives to fill vacant posts in various government departments. The discussion saw active participation from MLAs, including Sudip Roy Barman, Nirmal Biswas, Kishore Barman, Chittaranjan Debbarma, and Ranjit Das, who emphasized the importance of robust measures to address unemployment challenges in the state.
Government Efforts in Employment Generation
Roy detailed the government's achievements in job creation, citing that 13,654 regular employees had been appointed across various departments by December 31, 2024. This includes 2,437 candidates selected for JRBT Group D positions, with their postings expected shortly.
Additionally, the minister outlined that 12,419 irregular employees were appointed in different sectors during the government's tenure, including:
- 1,039 Anganwadi workers
- 1,160 Anganwadi helpers
- 1,262 Special Police Officers (SPOs)
- 5,771 outsourcing and contract workers
- 2,987 security guards and service providers
The state police department has also bolstered its workforce, recruiting 1,916 constables and 229 Police Inspectors (PI).
Ongoing Recruitment Drives
Highlighting future plans, Roy stated that recruitment is underway for 9,626 vacancies across various government departments. The state cabinet has recently approved the hiring of 2,627 individuals for multiple roles, further strengthening the state's workforce.
Focus on Industrial and Private Sector Jobs
In addition to government positions, the state government has prioritized industrial and private sector job creation:
- Over the past three years, 40,070 jobs have been generated through the Department of Industry and Commerce.
- The Industrial Development Corporation has facilitated the creation of 1,617 jobs.
These initiatives aim to diversify employment opportunities for the youth and encourage economic growth in the state.
Commitment to Reducing Unemployment
Minister Tinku Roy reiterated the government’s commitment to combating unemployment and creating a thriving job market. “The unemployment rate has decreased to 3.2% in the 2023-24 fiscal year, reflecting the success of our sustained efforts to create opportunities for the youth. The state government will continue to work towards ensuring better livelihoods for its people,” he said.
Opposition's Call for More Initiatives
While acknowledging the progress, opposition MLAs stressed the need for continued and enhanced efforts to fill existing vacancies in government departments. They called for transparent recruitment processes and additional measures to address employment challenges in rural and underserved areas.
The government’s report on employment generation, coupled with ongoing recruitment and private sector initiatives, demonstrates a focused approach toward tackling unemployment. However, the opposition's call for intensified efforts ensures that the issue remains a priority in the state's developmental agenda.
