In Telangana, at least eight workers are feared trapped after the roof of a tunnel in Nagarkurnool district collapsed this morning. Several workers have been injured in the incident. Rescue operations are currently underway, with Chief Minister Revanth Reddy directing concerned authorities to reach the spot immediately. The incident occurred due to the slippage of a concrete segment that was used to seal seepage at the 14-km inlet of the Srisailam Left Bank Canal tunnel, which runs from Srisailam towards Devarakonda.
The Chief Minister, in a statement, said some people were injured in the incident, and he had directed the District Collector, Superintendent of Police, and personnel from the fire department and Hyderabad Disaster Response and Assets Protection Agency (HYDRAA) to take up relief measures immediately. Irrigation Minister Uttam Kumar Reddy reached the site and monitored the rescue operations.
The workers had gone inside as part of the work when the roof collapsed at 12-13 km inside the tunnel. Union Coal Minister G. Kishan Reddy expressed concern and enquired about the reasons for the incident. He also asked officials to bring out those feared trapped to safety.
