Poisonous Mushrooms : Four Hospitalized

 Four members of a family from Nakacherra area of Behala Bari ADC Village in Khowai district were hospitalized after mistakenly consuming poisonous mushrooms on Thursday morning.

The family of Amit Munda collected mushrooms from their vegetable field near their home, believing them to be safe for consumption. They prepared and consumed the mushrooms by frying them in oil1. However, soon after eating, four family members—Basanti Munda (50), Ajay Munda (23), Shipra Munda (20), and Arjun Munda (7)—developed symptoms of poisoning. They started vomiting and experienced other complications.

The family was initially rushed to Khowai district hospital. However, as their condition deteriorated, the doctors on duty referred them to the GBP Hospital in Agartala for better treatment.

Mushroom poisoning can vary in severity, with symptoms ranging from gastrointestinal discomfort to organ failure. The most common symptoms include nausea, vomiting, abdominal pain, and diarrhea1. In severe cases, it can lead to liver and kidney failure, and even death.

Treatment for mushroom poisoning typically involves supportive care, such as hydration and monitoring of vital signs. In some cases, activated charcoal may be administered to limit the absorption of toxins3. Early medical intervention is crucial to prevent serious complications.

The incident has raised awareness about the dangers of consuming wild mushrooms without proper identification. Experts advise against foraging for mushrooms unless one is absolutely certain of their edibility and recommends seeking guidance from knowledgeable sources.

The family is currently receiving medical care, and their condition is being closely monitored. The local community has expressed concern and is offering support to the affected family.
