Nirmala Sinha gets National Handloom Award 2023 for Traditional Manipuri Weaving

The Ministry of Textiles has honored Nirmala Sinha, a 52-year-old weaver from Dhalai district in Tripura, with the prestigious National Handloom Award 2023. Sinha, known for her exceptional skills in weaving the traditional Manipuri attire, Inaphi, has been recognized for her dedication and craftsmanship.
Nirmala Sinha, a Divyang woman, has been weaving the Inaphi for the past 35 years. Despite facing numerous challenges, her unwavering determination and exceptional talent have earned her this esteemed recognition. Sinha hails from Barasurma village in Dhalai district and has become a symbol of resilience and excellence in the weaving community.
Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha congratulated Sinha on her achievement, emphasizing the inspirational nature of her story. In a heartfelt social media post, Dr. Saha said, “Despite being a Divyangjan, her indomitable will and commendable work will serve as a source of inspiration to all the weavers of our state. Her success is a testament to the power of perseverance and dedication. Best wishes for continued success and recognition in the years to come.”
Reflecting on her journey, Sinha expressed her pride and joy in receiving the National Handloom Award. She recounted her years of dedication to the craft, highlighting the cultural significance and heritage of traditional Manipuri weaving. “Weaving the Inaphi has been my passion and lifeline for 35 years. This recognition means the world to me and encourages me to continue preserving our rich cultural traditions,” said Sinha.
Nirmala Sinha will be formally presented with the National Handloom Award on August 7, during the celebration of National Handloom Day at Vigyan Mancha, New Delhi. The award ceremony is expected to be attended by dignitaries, industry leaders, and fellow artisans, marking a significant milestone in Sinha’s illustrious career.
The Inaphi is a traditional Manipuri shawl, known for its intricate designs and cultural importance.
