It happens to be a theft case that is first registered under the newly introduced criminal code in Tripura. The case numbered 15, was registered at Damcharra police station in North Tripura district on Monday, said Superintendent of Police Bhanupada Chakraborty affing that that this case marks the beginning of legal proceedings under the updated criminal code. He clarified that cases registered up until midnight on June 30 would, however. continue under the old system.

SP Chakraborty made these remarks during a one-day workshop and press conference held at the district magistrate's conference hall in Dharmanagar on Monday. The event was attended by Uttar Zila Sabhadipati Bhavatosh Das, Additional District Magistrate Biplab Das, Dharmanagar Sub-Divisional Magistrate Shyamjoy Jamatia, officials from the Information and Culture Department, police, and legal experts from various law-related departments.

During the press conference, it was announced that from July 1, new criminal laws had been introduced, fundamentally altering the existing legal system in the country. The new Criminal Code includes three significant laws: the Justice Code, the Indian Civil Protection Code, and the Indian Evidence Act. These new laws incorporate 60 to 70 percent of British-era legislation while introducing notable changes.

One significant change is the increased role of the police in special cases. For instance, the remand period has been extended to 40 to 60 days. Additionally, it is now mandatory for the legal process to be reported within 90 days if an accused is apprehended. Article 144, which previously applied to the general public, has been updated to Article 163. The new legislation also includes the Terrorist Act and expands provisions against Anti-National Activities.

Furthermore, the prison term related to certain accident cases has been extended from two years to five years. Measures against chit funds have been strengthened with proper enforcement actions. The numbering of sections from the old criminal law has been completely revised, marking a significant shift in the legal framework.

The workshop and press conference served as an important forum for discussing these changes and their implications for law enforcement and legal processes in Tripura.
