Tipra Motha reshuffles TTAADC leadership, appointing young leaders Runiel Debbarma as CEM and Bhabaranjan Reang as Chairman, replacing senior figures in a strategic shift toward youth-centric governance and loyalist-driven political restructuring in Tripura.
A sudden leadership reshuffle within Tipra Motha has sparked widespread discussion across Tripura, as the party pivots toward a youth-driven strategy in the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC). In an unexpected move announced on Monday, 37-year-old Runiel Debbarma has been named the new Chief Executive Member (CEM), while 39-year-old Bhabaranjan Reang will serve as Chairman of the council.
The appointments replace senior figures Purna Chandra Jamatia and Jagadish Debbarma, marking a clear generational transition within the party’s leadership. Additionally, CK Jamatia has been appointed as an Executive Member (EM), bringing administrative experience into the newly structured council.
The reshuffle, finalized during a virtual meeting held at the royal palace, was attended remotely by party supremo Pradyot Kishore Debbarman, who is currently undergoing medical treatment outside Agartala. According to an official statement, the newly elected Members of District Council (MDCs) unanimously proposed the names, signaling internal consensus despite the surprising nature of the decision.
Political observers interpret the move as a calculated shift aimed at strengthening the party’s connection with younger voters. After successfully retaining control of the TTAADC, Tipra Motha appears to be rebranding itself with a more youth-centric image. This strategy aligns with recent public remarks by Debbarman emphasizing the importance of energizing the party’s grassroots base and preparing for future political challenges.
Sources within the party suggest that loyalty played a significant role in the selection process. Leaders who stood firmly with the party during critical phases were reportedly prioritized over those who had switched affiliations or displayed inconsistent support. This internal recalibration follows reported dissatisfaction within the leadership regarding certain members who allegedly distanced themselves or adopted ambiguous positions during the council elections.
The inclusion of CK Jamatia as an Executive Member is being viewed as a balancing act between youth and experience. Having previously served as Chief Executive Officer of the TTAADC, his administrative background is expected to provide stability and guidance to the relatively young leadership team. Analysts believe this blend could help the council address pressing governance challenges, particularly financial constraints within the autonomous body.
The newly appointed CEM, Runiel Debbarma, is expected to take charge with a focus on administrative efficiency and grassroots engagement. Meanwhile, Bhabaranjan Reang’s appointment as Chairman underscores the party’s intent to project a dynamic and forward-looking leadership image. Both leaders are set to officially assume office following their oath-taking ceremony at the TTAADC headquarters.
Speculation had been rife since the declaration of election results on April 17, with many anticipating senior leaders such as Rajeswar Debbarma or Purna Chandra Jamatia to retain key positions. The final decision, however, has disrupted those expectations and highlighted Debbarman’s willingness to make bold organizational changes.

While the move has energized sections of the party, it may also present challenges in managing senior leaders who played crucial roles in shaping regional politics. How Tipra Motha accommodates these experienced figures within its evolving structure remains an open question. Political analysts suggest that maintaining internal cohesion will be critical as the party navigates its next phase.
The reshuffle is expected to influence not only the functioning of the TTAADC but also the broader political landscape in Tripura. With a renewed focus on youth leadership and loyalty, Tipra Motha appears to be positioning itself for long-term relevance in the state’s evolving political dynamics.
