TIPRA Motha Party (TMP) founder Pradyot Deb Barma questions AMC eviction drive, alleging selective action against poor vendors while encroachments on his family land remain unaddressed.

TIPRA Motha founder Pradyot Kishore Deb Barma has criticised the Agartala Municipal Corporation (AMC) over its ongoing eviction drive, alleging that civic authorities are targeting poor street vendors while failing to take action against large-scale encroachments on his family’s land in Agartala.

Deb Barma raised the issue during his visit to Nandanagar on Monday, where he met women vendors who were recently evicted by the AMC. The vendors reportedly told him that the eviction had affected their only source of livelihood and created difficulties for their families.

Describing the affected vendors as indigenous women who had been earning their livelihoods by selling vegetables, Deb Barma questioned what he described as disproportionate enforcement against economically vulnerable sections of society.

“Why is action being taken only against the weak, street vendors and poor people?” he asked, while alleging that nearly 60 per cent of his family’s land in Agartala remains under illegal occupation without similar municipal intervention.

The TIPRA Motha founder said civic authorities must maintain a balance between urban regulation and the livelihood concerns of ordinary people. He stressed that enforcement measures should not undermine the dignity and survival of communities dependent on small-scale businesses for their daily income.

Deb Barma also called for a more humane and people-centric approach to civic administration, arguing that development and regulation should be implemented fairly and without disproportionately affecting vulnerable sections of society.

Expressing solidarity with the evicted vendors, he announced that the Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) administration had provided Rs 10,000 in compensation to each affected vendor. The assistance, he said, was intended to offer immediate support to families facing financial difficulties following the eviction.

Earlier in the day, Deb Barma addressed a TIPRA Motha meeting at Manikya Court, where he reiterated his party’s commitment to protecting the rights and welfare of indigenous people.

His comments have added political weight to the debate surrounding the AMC’s ongoing enforcement activities. The issue has raised broader questions about urban encroachment, municipal regulation, street-vendor livelihoods and the need for equitable enforcement.

With Deb Barma directly highlighting the concerns of evicted vendors, the civic eviction drive has become a significant point of discussion in Tripura’s public and political discourse. His intervention has also challenged the administration to ensure that urban development and enforcement are carried out with fairness, compassion and consideration for vulnerable communities.
