A fresh controversy has erupted in Tripura after three policemen attached to Teliamura police station were suspended over allegations of illegally diverting seized Eskuf cough syrup into the black market. The accusations have intensified public concern regarding alleged police involvement in narcotics trafficking in the region.
District Superintendent of Police K.B. Jagadeeswar Reddy took immediate action after serious allegations surfaced against the officers. Inspector Ajit Debbarma, Sub-Inspector Rajendra Reang, and Constable Sukanta Deb were suspended pending a departmental inquiry into the matter.
According to reports, the controversy stems from an anti-narcotics operation conducted late at night on May 20. During the operation, police intercepted a suspicious vehicle and officially claimed to have recovered around 600 bottles of Eskuf cough syrup. However, reliable sources alleged that the actual quantity seized was close to 6,000 bottles.
The allegations further claim that a large portion of the recovered cough syrup was not officially recorded. Instead, thousands of bottles were allegedly returned to traffickers, while several hundred bottles were reportedly sold illegally in the local market, where codeine-based cough syrups are widely abused by drug users.
The case has sparked outrage among residents and social organizations, with many demanding a transparent investigation and strict punishment if the accusations are proven true. Concerns have also been raised over repeated allegations involving drug seizures and the role of certain police personnel in facilitating narcotics circulation.
Codeine-based cough syrups such as Eskuf have been banned due to their widespread misuse, especially among youths in Tripura and neighboring Bangladesh. Despite repeated crackdowns by law enforcement agencies, illegal trafficking of such substances continues to remain a serious challenge in border areas.
The latest allegations have once again placed the functioning of Teliamura police station under scrutiny. Political observers and local residents believe the incident could damage public trust in anti-drug operations if accountability is not ensured.
