Two-time Olympic medallist P. V. Sindhu and India’s top men’s doubles pair Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty advanced to the quarter-finals of the Thailand Open with impressive victories today.
World No. 12 Sindhu continued her fine form, defeating Denmark’s Amalie Schulz in straight games, 21-13, 21-15, in just 28 minutes. The former world champion dominated the contest with aggressive stroke play and sharp movement on court. Earlier, Sindhu had comfortably beaten Chinese Taipei’s Tung Ciou-Tong 21-9, 21-12 in the opening round.
Sindhu will now face reigning world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan in the quarter-finals. The Indian ace holds a narrow 15-13 advantage in their head-to-head record, setting up an exciting contest between the two seasoned rivals.
Meanwhile, top-seeded Indian men’s doubles pair Satwik and Chirag defeated Malaysia’s Bryan Jeremy Goonting and Muhammad Haikal 21-12, 21-19 in straight games to book their place in the last eight. The Indian duo, who entered the tournament after helping India secure a historic Thomas Cup bronze medal, had earlier overcome Indonesians Muh Putra Erwiansyah and Bagas Maulana in a hard-fought three-game encounter. Later today, India’s campaign will continue with Lakshya Sen, Kidambi Srikanth, Malvika Bansod and Devika Sihag in action.
