Tension erupts in Kailashahar over a women’s hostel construction project as allegations, political blame, and vandalism claims fuel controversy. Heavy security deployed amid rising conflict between contractor Abdul Mannan, local activists, and political leaders.
A tense atmosphere has engulfed Kailashahar town following a fierce dispute surrounding the construction of a government-backed working women’s hostel in Durgapur. The project, initially seen as a progressive step for women’s welfare, has now become a flashpoint of political and business conflict marked by allegations, counter-allegations, and fears of further escalation.
Foundation of a Controversy
The controversy traces back to a government initiative under the Kailashahar Municipal Council to build a working women’s hostel in Durgapur. Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha had laid the foundation stone on March 4 this year, in the presence of Youth Affairs and Sports Minister Tinku Roy.

The construction contract was awarded to Abdul Mannan of Mahi Construction, who began groundwork at the site several weeks ago.
However, what began as a development effort quickly turned into a political storm. Mannan alleged that he was pressured to pay an illegal “commission” before starting construction.
Upon refusing, he claimed that a group of 30–40 miscreants disrupted his workers, threatened labourers, and halted operations temporarily. Despite the threats, Mannan resumed work and lodged a written complaint at the Kailashahar police station.
Midnight Attack Sparks Outrage
The situation worsened on Friday night when Mannan’s construction site reportedly came under attack. On Saturday morning, he alleged that unknown assailants cut off power lines and set fire to construction machinery at his plant in Singirbil under Chandipur constituency.
In a shocking claim, Mannan accused local lawyer and social worker Sandeep Debroy and youth leader Surajit Pal of masterminding the assault. According to Mannan, the plan to sabotage the site was allegedly discussed at Debroy’s residence, and he demanded immediate police action against those involved.
Counterclaims and Political Tensions
Denying all allegations, Surajit Pal hit back, describing Mannan’s statements as “politically motivated lies.” He accused Mannan of trying to malign the ruling party and stirring unrest in Kailashahar. Pal further branded Mannan as a “controversial contractor” with a history of shifting political loyalties—having supported the Left earlier, then joining the BJP in 2023.
Pal also claimed that Mannan’s recent use of a CPM letterhead for a puja vehicle pass indicates renewed alignment with opposition forces. “His drama is part of a bigger political game. He’s trying to gain sympathy while blaming innocent people,” Pal told reporters.
Meanwhile, local Congress MLA Birajit Sinha, who visited the construction site earlier this week, condemned the attack and urged authorities to ensure the project proceeds smoothly. He also appealed to all sides to avoid confrontation and maintain peace. However, Pal accused Sinha of exploiting the controversy for political mileage—a claim Sinha has firmly rejected.
Security on High Alert
With tensions mounting, the district administration has taken no chances. A large contingent of police and Tripura State Rifles (TSR) has been deployed across Durgapur and adjoining areas. The deployment is being supervised directly by the Sub-Divisional Police Officer (SDPO) and the Officer-in-Charge of Kailashahar Police Station.
Security forces have been tasked with maintaining round-the-clock vigilance to prevent any further violence or vandalism. Authorities have also increased patrolling in politically sensitive zones, including the project site and nearby residential areas.
Residents in Kailashahar have expressed concern that the escalating feud could lead to larger political clashes if not handled swiftly. “We just want the project to continue peacefully. These disputes only delay development,” said a local shopkeeper near the site.
A Development Dream at Crossroads
What was meant to be a welfare initiative empowering working women has now become a symbol of Kailashahar’s deepening political divides. As both sides trade accusations, the future of the project—and peace in the area—hangs in the balance.

Local observers believe that swift administrative intervention and transparent investigation are key to restoring trust. For now, the project site remains under tight watch, reflecting a broader sentiment across Kailashahar: a mix of frustration, fear, and an urgent call for calm.
