Tripura Democratic Front—a lesser known state party with virtually no presence in the state- joined the Trinamool Congress on Wednesday.
The TDF was floated by a section of disgruntled Congress leaders led by former TPCC president Pijush Biswas and his two comrades in arms Tapas Dey and Tejen Das. However, Biswas gave the rein of the party to his son Pujan Biswas.
From the very beginning the TDF sought to woo the TIPRA Motha and indulge in hobnobbing with it. That ultimately boomerang as the TDF did not find any foot hold in the state- first it did not have any towering political personality in its fold, nor it could espouse a strong political vision. On top of that its hobnobbing with TIPRA Motha which is considered a regional party with strong anti-Bengali sentiment just backfired. As it happened neither TIPRA Motha nor any other party took the small party seriously. It was virtually a stillbirth. For the last few months the TDF failed to make its presence felt and was dying. It was this juncture TDF president Pujan Biswas felt it prudent to dissolve the party and join Trinamool Congress.
Interestingly , as the Trinamool Congress itself was struggling hard to make some foray into the state politics , the TDF seniors like Pujan Biswas’s father or two other leaders did not align –they did not join the Trinamool Congress. Their political future course was, however, not known yet.
The TDF juniors joined the Trinamool Congress in presence of MP Susmita Dev and state in-charge Rajib Banerjee in Agartala.
Dev after the joining told the media that said, their fight against BJP had been strengthened with the joining.
Rajib Banerjee said, Pujan’s joining would definitely boost the TMC’s youth wing in the state.
He said “a united fight is needed to stop BJP’s misrule in the state. Mamata Banerjee-led TMC fought the BJP in West Bengal and retained power”.
