Youth Congress president Rakhu Das who was arrested along with three of his compatriots Congress leader Dulal Ghosh of Bisranganj, Youth Congress leader Hriday Das, Bitru Das on Tuesday night was sent to six day police remand.
The Congress activists were arrested for obstructing the police in discharging their duties and indulging in street violence by the Bisramganj police.
It was alleged that while the Youth congress had organized a party programme without mandatory Police permission at the the building owned by Congress leader off the area Dulal Ghosh, they also indulged in throwing glass bottles and brick batting at a BJP procession that passed near the venue.
As expected serious tension gripped the area and when police personnel rushed to the spot led by SDPO Rahul Das, it was alleged that Youth Congress workers, especially Rakhu Das began misbehaving with the police. Worse, a policeman was also injured in the brickbatting.
A formal case was filed and Inspector Srikanta Chakraborty of Bisramganj police station arrested the four persons named in the FIR. They were produced before the Bishalgarh Sub-Divisional Court on Wednesday afternoon and a lawyers led by Congress leader and lawyer Harekrishna Bhowmik from Agartala pleaded for their bail. Advocate Gautam Giri fought the case on behalf of the government.
However, the court ordered the four accused to be remanded in jail for six days.
The incident caused huge political sensation across the state. Police said they were aware of the situation and a close watch was being maintained.
