TCPCR celebrated its 12th Foundation Day in Agartala, highlighting child protection, anti-child-marriage initiatives, and government welfare schemes. Leaders honoured achievers, specially-abled students, and social workers while urging stronger community responsibility and awareness to safeguard children’s rights across Tripura.

The Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights (TCPCR) commemorated its 12th Foundation Day with a significant state-level event at Sukanta Academy in Agartala on Sunday. The programme brought together key government representatives, child rights advocates, and social welfare organisations, all united in their commitment to strengthening child protection systems across the state.

The ceremony was formally inaugurated by Agartala Municipal Corporation Mayor and MLA Dipak Majumder, who highlighted the urgent need to ensure that the benefits of central and state welfare schemes reach every vulnerable household. Addressing the gathering, Majumder emphasized that safeguarding children must begin at home and extend to every community space where a child grows, learns, and interacts.

He stressed that parents, guardians, teachers, and society at large share equal responsibility in ensuring a safe environment for children. Majumder also pointed out that the government has implemented several programmes to shield children and women from exploitation, abuse, and trafficking, but the real impact of these policies depends on public awareness and participation.

“Child safety starts within the family. Unless we collectively commit to protecting every child, no government initiative can achieve its full potential,” he said. Majumder further applauded TCPCR for its consistent and proactive role in promoting awareness, monitoring safety concerns, and intervening in cases of child rights violations across Tripura.

The event also saw an inspiring address by Jharna Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Women, who underscored the need for long-term social responsibility. She stated that care and protection for children must not be limited to one’s own family but extended to every child in the community. Debbarma issued a strong appeal to citizens to remain vigilant and united in preventing child marriages — a persistent social challenge in several pockets of the state.

She urged teachers, community workers, and local leaders to work hand-in-hand to identify early signs of vulnerability among children and intervene before harm occurs. “It is our collective obligation to ensure that no child is forced into early marriage or pushed into unsafe environments. Protecting children is not just a legal duty but a moral responsibility,” she said.

The Foundation Day programme was chaired by Jayanti Debbarma, Chairperson of the Tripura Commission for Protection of Child Rights, who reaffirmed the Commission’s commitment to advocating for children’s welfare, addressing grievances, and working closely with government agencies to strengthen policy implementation. Officials from the Social Welfare and Social Education Department, representatives from child welfare committees, and various dignitaries were present at the ceremony.

A major highlight of the event was the felicitation of outstanding achievers from the state. Two exceptional young talents — Jyotsna Akhtar and Arshia Das — were honoured for their remarkable accomplishments in their respective fields, serving as examples of resilience and inspiration for Tripura’s youth. Their achievements, celebrated by the state leadership, reflect the potential of children when provided with the right opportunities and support.

In addition, the Commission recognised the academic excellence of specially-abled students who successfully cleared their Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations despite challenges. Their perseverance and determination were acknowledged as symbols of strength and empowerment.

Social activist Shubham Biswas, founder of the Swapna Foundation, was also felicitated for his impactful contributions to community welfare. Through his organisation, Biswas has been actively involved in assisting underprivileged children, conducting awareness drives, and supporting marginalised families — efforts that earned him special appreciation at the ceremony.

The Foundation Day celebration served as a platform to reaffirm Tripura’s commitment to protecting children’s rights and building an inclusive society where every child receives equal opportunities for growth and safety. With leaders calling for increased awareness, stronger community vigilance, and greater collaboration across departments, the event underscored the need for sustained efforts to curb exploitation and promote child welfare.
