Tripura Board of Secondary Education (TBSE) doubles invigilation remuneration for teachers during Madhyamik and Higher Secondary examinations from Rs 20 to Rs 40 per day after concerns over low payments compared to CBSE exam duty allowances sparked criticism in Tripura.

The Tripura Board of Secondary Education has announced an increase in remuneration for teachers performing examination invigilation duties during the ongoing state board examinations. The decision comes after growing concerns among educators over the long-standing low payment structure for exam duty in Tripura.

According to officials, teachers assigned to invigilation duty during the current Madhyamik Examination and Higher Secondary Examination will now receive Rs 40 per day, doubling the earlier remuneration of Rs 20. The previous rate had reportedly remained unchanged for several years, despite repeated concerns raised by teachers and education stakeholders.

The revision follows public discussion triggered by a report published in the Tripura Times on February 20, which highlighted the disparity in payments received by teachers performing examination duties. The report pointed out that while teachers supervising board examinations under the Tripura board were paid a minimal amount, their counterparts conducting invigilation for the Central Board of Secondary Education examinations reportedly receive around Rs 475 per day.

The comparison sparked criticism among educators, who argued that the responsibilities of invigilation—maintaining discipline, preventing malpractice, and ensuring smooth conduct of examinations—are similar regardless of the board conducting the exam. Many teachers had called the earlier payment structure inadequate and outdated, urging authorities to review the remuneration policy.

Responding to the concerns, the TBSE authorities decided to revise the payment, effectively doubling the daily allowance for teachers engaged in the crucial task of supervising examination halls. Although the revised rate is still significantly lower than that offered by CBSE, the move has been viewed by many as a positive step toward acknowledging the efforts of educators involved in the examination process.

Officials from the board indicated that the decision was taken to address teachers’ grievances and to ensure smooth conduct of examinations across the state. Hundreds of teachers across various schools have been deployed as invigilators at multiple examination centres in Tripura.

The Higher Secondary examinations under TBSE began on February 25, while the Madhyamik examinations started on February 26 across different centres in the state. Thousands of students are appearing for these crucial board examinations that play a significant role in their academic future.

Education observers believe that while the hike is modest, it reflects growing recognition of teachers’ roles in maintaining the integrity and fairness of the examination system. Many educators, however, continue to advocate for a more substantial revision of remuneration in the future.
