Union Textiles Minister Giriraj Singh today said that India’s textile market has grown from about 8.5 lakh crore rupees in 2014-15 to over 16 lakh crore rupees at present. Briefing the media in New Delhi on the occasion of 12 years of achievements of the Modi government, Mr. Singh said that the textile sector is the largest employment-generating industry in the country after agriculture. The Minister highlighted that India’s silk production has increased from 26,480 metric tonnes to 42,005 metric tonnes, while silk imports have declined by nearly 50 per cent. The Textiles Minister also informed that a target has been set to double the size of the textile industry by 2047. Mr Singh emphasised that India is now exporting textile products to 191 countries across the world, underscoring the sector’s growing global reach.On the occasion, Minister of State for Textile Pabitra Margherita, and Secretary Neelam Shami Rao were also present at the event.
