Tourism Minister Sushanta Chowdhury on Saturday underscored the significant growth in Tripura’s tourism sector under the current government, drawing comparisons with the previous Left regime. Addressing reporters in Agartala, he detailed a marked increase in tourist numbers and revenue generation during the tenure of the present administration.
Chowdhury revealed that during the Left Front regime (2013–2018), the state welcomed 18,69,376 domestic tourists and 1,79,404 international tourists. In contrast, from 2018 onwards, under the new government, these numbers surged to 21,90,362 domestic tourists and 4,29,828 international tourists, despite the tourism industry grappling with a two-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The revenue figures reflected a similar upward trajectory. The tourism sector’s revenue collection grew from ₹15.52 crore during the Left Front’s tenure to ₹31.25 crore under the current government. This growth, Chowdhury said, underscores the effectiveness of the government’s focused efforts to enhance Tripura’s appeal as a tourist destination.
The Minister also elaborated on upcoming initiatives aimed at further boosting tourism infrastructure in the state. He announced the deployment of 50 boats within the next 15 days at popular tourist sites like Chabimura, Narkelkunja, and Neermahal. Additionally, a proposal to introduce another 50 boats has already been approved.
Chowdhury highlighted that various projects worth ₹529 crore are currently being implemented across the state to develop tourism infrastructure. These projects are expected to enhance the overall visitor experience and further elevate Tripura’s profile on the national and international tourism map.
Expressing optimism, Chowdhury stated, “In the next two years, Tripura will achieve unprecedented growth in the tourism sector, reaching new heights.”
The Minister’s remarks reflect the government’s commitment to making tourism a key driver of economic growth and cultural promotion in Tripura, with ambitious plans to solidify its position as a preferred destination in Northeast India.
