Colombo/IBNS: In one of his first key moves after assuming office as Sri Lankas newly-elected President, leftist leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake Tuesday dissolved the countrys Parliament and called for snap polls within one month.
The move comes close on the heels of his electoral promise to bring change in Sri Lankas decades-old rule by political families.
The dissolution of Sri Lankas Parliament will be effective from tonight and the fresh elections will be held on November 14, a special gazette notification said.
The last time that Sri Lankas Parliament was convened was way back in August 2020.
The term, though in place till August 2025, comes to an end tonight, 11 months ahead of schedule.
Anura Kumara Dissanayake took oath as the ninth executive president of Sri Lanka on Monday, just years after the country experienced a severe economic crisis.
He was elected the president of the Island Nation after he registered a victory in the presidential polls.
Dissanayakes alliance with the National Peoples Power rose to prominence after the 2022 movement.
