Tripura MLA Birajit Sinha files case against Minister Tinku Roy over alleged non-disclosure of criminal records in election affidavit, raising serious questions on electoral transparency, legal compliance, and potential disqualification under election laws.
A legal challenge has been initiated in Tripura’s Unakoti district, where a senior political figure has approached the judiciary over alleged discrepancies in an election affidavit. The move has intensified political attention in the region, raising questions about transparency and compliance with electoral norms.
Veteran Congress leader and Kailashahar MLA Birajit Sinha on Thursday filed a petition before the Chief Judicial Magistrate (CJM) court in Unakoti district against state minister Tinku Roy. The petition accuses Roy of failing to disclose alleged criminal antecedents in the affidavit submitted prior to the elections. Such disclosures are mandatory under election laws to ensure transparency and informed voting.
Sinha’s legal counsel, advocate Narasingha Das, represented him during the court proceedings. Additionally, Tripura Pradesh Youth Congress leader and advocate Pujan Biswas also appeared in support of the petition during the hearing. The legal team emphasized that non-disclosure of criminal records, if proven, constitutes a serious violation of electoral conduct.
According to Sinha, there have been previous instances in India where elected representatives were disqualified for similar omissions in their affidavits. He argued that the integrity of the electoral process must be upheld, and any deviation should face strict scrutiny under the law.
