Shyamal Chowdhury eminent writer and also father of Minister Sushanta Chowdhury, breathed his last at the ILS hospital in Agartala this morning. He was suffering from cancer.

 Chowdhury was also recipient of the “Muktijudda Maitri Sammanna” State Award from the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh for his role during the 1971 Bangladesh Liberation war.

 Chief Minister Dr. Manik Saha offered prayers for the peace of his departed soul and extended his heartfelt condolences to the grieving family.

In his condolence message, the Chief Minister expressed profound sorrow at the demise of Shyamal Chowdhury.

Chowdhury’s life was marked by active participation in various movements. He played a pivotal role in the Bengali language movement in Chittagong during his student years and later settled in Udaipur, where he joined the CPI under the leadership of Sunil Krishna Das. As a leader of the party’s Krishak Front, he led efforts to secure land for the landless in East Gokulpur of Udaipur subdivision. Subsequently, he transitioned to Congress politics after leaving the Communist Party. In his later years, he retired from active politics and dedicated himself to writing and social work.

During the Liberation War of Bangladesh in 1971, he  exhibited remarkable dedication, serving as a leader of the Farmers’ Front and actively participating in relief efforts for refugees in Udaipur. He also engaged in marches and meetings in support of the liberation war. His contributions extended beyond activism, as he authored several books on contemporary politics and social policy matters.

Chowdhury’s impactful endeavors were recognized on October 1, 2013, when he was honored with the Liberation War Friendship Award by His Excellency the President of Bangladesh Abdul Hamid and the Honorable Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina at the Dhaka Bangabandhu International Conference Centre. His legacy as a champion of social justice, literature, and activism will be cherished by many
