Union Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia arrived in Shillong to attend the 73rd North Eastern Council Plenary Session chaired by Amit Shah. The meeting focuses on Northeast connectivity, infrastructure development, economic growth, inter-state coordination, and technology-driven solutions through NESAC to accelerate inclusive and sustainable development across the region.
Union Minister for Communications and Development of North Eastern Region (DoNER), Jyotiraditya Scindia, arrived in Shillong on Wednesday for a two-day visit to participate in a series of important meetings, including the 73rd Plenary Session of the North Eastern Council (NEC), a key platform for reviewing and accelerating developmental initiatives across the Northeastern states.
The plenary session, being held at the State Convention Centre in Shillong, is chaired by Union Home and Cooperation Minister Amit Shah, who also serves as the Chairman of the North Eastern Council. The meeting brings together senior officials from the Central Government and representatives from all eight Northeastern states, including chief ministers, governors, and top administrators.
According to official sources, the plenary session is expected to focus on a comprehensive development roadmap for the Northeast, with particular emphasis on strengthening regional connectivity, expanding infrastructure, boosting economic growth, and enhancing coordination among the states of the region.
The meeting assumes considerable importance as the Centre continues to prioritise the Northeast as a strategic growth region. Over the years, the government has launched several initiatives aimed at improving road, rail, air, and digital connectivity while promoting economic integration and inclusive development.
Officials said the NEC plenary would review the progress of ongoing developmental projects and assess the implementation of various schemes undertaken in the region. Discussions are also expected to outline future strategies that can ensure sustainable growth and improved socio-economic conditions across the Northeast.
A major focus of the deliberations is likely to be infrastructure development, which remains a crucial factor in unlocking the region’s economic potential. Improved connectivity is expected to facilitate trade, tourism, investment, and employment opportunities while strengthening links between the Northeastern states and the rest of the country.
During his visit, Scindia is also scheduled to attend a meeting related to the North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC), an institution that plays a significant role in leveraging space technology for regional development. The discussions are expected to explore the use of advanced technological tools and satellite-based applications to support various sectors.
Officials indicated that the NESAC meeting would examine opportunities for technology-driven interventions in disaster management, agriculture, resource mapping, planning, and connectivity enhancement. Such initiatives are viewed as critical for addressing geographical challenges and improving service delivery across remote and difficult terrains in the Northeast.
The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region has been actively implementing programmes designed to strengthen both physical and digital infrastructure in the region. Efforts have also been directed towards promoting tourism, improving agricultural productivity, enhancing skill development, and creating sustainable livelihood opportunities for local communities.
The NEC plenary session comes at a time when the government is intensifying efforts to accelerate development and deepen regional integration across the Northeast. Policymakers believe that stronger inter-state collaboration, supported by improved infrastructure and modern technology, can significantly contribute to the region’s long-term prosperity.
