A schoolboy was killed and his mother critically injured in a brutal attack at Churaibari, triggering massive protests as locals blocked NH-8 demanding swift police action and immediate arrest of the culprits. Police teams are investigating possible personal enmity behind the assault.
A tense atmosphere gripped Churaibari on Friday after an eight-year-old schoolboy was killed and his mother critically injured in a violent attack that has shaken the region. The shocking incident occurred near Arjun Tilla in the Kherengjuri area when the mother-son duo was returning home from school. The brutality of the assault and the subsequent delay in police response compelled local residents to block the national highway in protest, demanding immediate action against the attackers.
According to police and eyewitness accounts, 28-year-old Vijaya Sinha was riding home on a scooter with her son, Amrit Sinha, after picking him up from Bagbasa Covenant English Medium School. Around 2 pm, a group of unidentified assailants in a vehicle allegedly intercepted them on the road. Reports from local residents indicate that the attackers forcibly stopped their scooter and launched a sudden assault with sharp weapons, targeting both the mother and the child.
Witnesses claimed that the assailants fled the scene within minutes, leaving the severely injured victims lying on the roadside. Passers-by rushed the two to Shanicherra Primary Health Centre, but despite the doctors’ efforts, young Amrit succumbed to his injuries and was declared dead on arrival. His mother, who suffered multiple deep wounds and heavy blood loss, was initially treated at the PHC but later referred to Silchar Hospital where her condition remains extremely critical.
Possible Motive: Personal Dispute Suspected
The incident has prompted widespread speculation regarding the motive of the attack. Local residents stated that the Sinha family had a long-standing history of disputes with certain neighbours and relatives. According to them, the assault appears to be the result of personal enmity, rather than a random act of violence. Several villagers believe the attack was pre-planned and executed with precision.
Residents pointed out that the attackers seemed to know the route and timing of the mother and child, strengthening the suspicion that the assault was carefully orchestrated. However, police officials have yet to confirm these claims and have stated that investigations are underway to determine all possible angles, including personal, property-related, and family disputes.
Protests Erupt Over Alleged Police Inaction
As news of the attack spread, anger and frustration quickly escalated among the residents of Shanicherra and surrounding areas. Villagers alleged that despite being informed soon after the incident, the police failed to respond promptly or take immediate action. They claimed that the absence of timely intervention allowed the attackers to escape easily.
By evening, hundreds of agitated locals gathered outside Shanicherra PHC, demanding transparency in the investigation and swift arrests. The protest soon intensified as demonstrators moved to NH-8 near Lamba Gach, where they blocked the crucial national highway by burning tyres and obstructing traffic. The blockade resulted in long queues of stranded vehicles and significant disruption of movement between Tripura and Assam.
Protesters shouted slogans demanding justice for the child and stronger security measures in the region. Many residents urged authorities to ensure that the culprits do not evade the law, citing past instances where similar cases remained unresolved for long periods.
Police Attempt to Restore Order
Police teams eventually arrived at the protest site, attempting to negotiate with the agitated crowd and restore normalcy. Officers assured the villagers that investigations are being conducted on priority and that all suspects linked to the dispute will be questioned. They also appealed for calm, emphasizing that blocking a national highway would only delay emergency transport and worsen public inconvenience.
Senior officials have reportedly been instructed to intensify patrolling in the area and gather information from locals to identify eyewitnesses and potential suspects. Forensic experts were also deployed to examine the attack site for evidence.
As of late evening, the situation remained tense but under control, with police monitoring the area closely.
