Shyam Sunder S. Benegal, the legendary filmmaker and a pioneer of India’s parallel cinema movement, passed away at the age of 90 after a prolonged battle with kidney disease. His family confirmed the news on Monday.

Benegal, known for his critically acclaimed works such as Ankur, Manthan, Zubeida, The Making of the Mahatma, and Junoon, breathed his last at a private hospital in Mumbai. He is survived by his wife Nira and daughter Pia.

Born on December 14, 1934, in Hyderabad, Benegal belonged to a Konkani-speaking Chitrapur Saraswat Brahman family. His early interest in filmmaking was sparked by his father, Sridhar B. Benegal, a photographer, who gifted him a camera at the age of 12. This marked the beginning of a remarkable career spanning over six decades.

Awards and Achievements

Shyam Benegal’s illustrious career earned him numerous accolades, including the Padma Shri (1976), Padma Bhushan (1991), and the Dadasaheb Phalke Award (2005). His films garnered countless National Awards, alongside widespread international recognition.

Early Life and Career

Benegal pursued a Master’s degree in Economics and later founded the Hyderabad Film Society. His professional journey began in 1959 as a copywriter at Lintas Advertising Agency in Mumbai, where he rose to become Creative Head, producing over 900 ad films and sponsored documentaries.

In 1962, Benegal made his first Gujarati documentary, Gher Betha Ganga (Ganga at Doorsteps), and later taught at the Film & Television Institute of India (FTII), serving as its Chairman twice. His directorial debut in feature films came with Ankur (1974), which won three National Awards and established him as a force in Indian cinema.

Benegal contributed significantly to Indian television, creating memorable serials like Yatra (1986), Bharat Ek Khoj (1988), Sankranti (1997), and Samvidhaan (2014).
