President Ram Nath Kovind appreciated the combined efforts of the Union Government and State Government for bringing peace and fast pace development in North East region in recent years.
He was speaking at the concluding session of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha in Tamulpur district of Assam this morning.
The President said language and literature connect the people.
He also appreciated the efforts of the Bodo Sahitya Sabha for their initiatives for development and promotion of Bodo language and said it is the duty of the society to protect and preserve a language.
It was a historic moment for the Bodo Sahitya Sabha as Ram Nath Kovind is the first President ever to have attended any literary event of any language in the northeastern region.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma in his address said that the inclusion of tribal languages of different communities of NE region would strengthen the country. Every language is important and it must be preserved, he added.
Assam Chief Minister Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma said that language promotes our heritage and culture. He announced that State govt. has decided to provide Bodo medium instruction at schools up to 12th on selected schools.
The Chief Minister also announced that state govt would provide Rs. 50 lakh to the districts inhabited by Bodo-speaking people for construction of Bodo Sahitya Sabhas.
Assam Governor Prof. Jagdish Mukhi, Chief Minister of Sikkim Prem Singh Tamang, Assam Legislative assembly Speaker Biswajit Daimari, MPs and MLAs and Bodo Territorial Region Chief Executive Member, Promod Boro, and parliamentarians from Bangladesh and Nepal were also present during the occasion. A large number of Bodo language-speaking people from Bangladesh, Nepal, Tripura, Nagaland, and West Bengal are also attending the event.
The President who is on a four-day visit to the North Eastern States, will also grace the valedictory function of North East Festival at Guwahati this afternoon, organized by the Ministry of DoNER as a part of ‘Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav’.
