Tension prevailed in North Tripura’s Dharmanagar on Saturday after students participating in a peaceful protest alleged that they were attacked by a group of miscreants while demonstrating against the recent incidents of assaults on students in Delhi. The unexpected violence disrupted the programme and triggered concern among local residents over the safety of democratic protests.
According to the protesting students, the demonstration was organised to express solidarity with students who were allegedly assaulted in Delhi and to raise awareness about student safety and democratic rights. The protesters claimed that while the programme was proceeding peacefully, a group of unidentified miscreants suddenly attacked them, forcing participants to flee from the protest site.
The students alleged that several participants had to take shelter inside the Congress Bhavan in Dharmanagar to protect themselves from the attackers. The incident created panic among those present and led to a tense atmosphere in the surrounding area.
Former North Tripura District Congress president Digbijoy Chakraborty reportedly extended support to the students during the incident. He provided necessary assistance to those who had taken refuge inside the Congress Bhavan and expressed concern over the alleged attack on peaceful demonstrators.
The incident drew attention from local residents, many of whom voiced concern over the disruption of what was intended to be a peaceful democratic programme. Citizens emphasised the importance of ensuring that individuals can participate in lawful protests without fear of violence or intimidation.
Following the incident, the protesting students demanded immediate legal action against those allegedly involved in the attack. They urged the administration and law enforcement agencies to conduct a thorough investigation, identify the accused, and take appropriate legal measures in accordance with the law.
The protesters also appealed to the authorities to strengthen security arrangements for future democratic programmes and ensure that peaceful demonstrations can be conducted without interference. They reiterated that their movement was solely aimed at highlighting student-related issues and condemned the alleged attack, describing it as an attempt to disrupt a peaceful protest.
