Political tension escalated in Dharmanagar after an alleged attack on two Youth Congress workers in Chandrapur Club area. Congress leaders demanded immediate arrests, a fair investigation, and strict action, warning of a larger protest if the accused are not apprehended within 24 hours.
Political tension escalated in the Chandrapur Club area under Dharmanagar Police Station after two Youth Congress workers were allegedly attacked by a group of miscreants on Saturday night. The incident triggered widespread unrest, prompting Congress leaders and supporters to stage a protest outside the police station, demanding swift legal action against those responsible.
According to party leaders, the alleged assault left the two Youth Congress workers injured. They were immediately shifted to Dharmanagar District Hospital, where they are currently undergoing medical treatment. The incident quickly drew the attention of local Congress leaders, who described the attack as a serious threat to democratic political activities in the region.
Soon after the incident, a large number of Congress workers and supporters, led by district-level leaders, gathered outside Dharmanagar Police Station and organised a gherao. The protesters submitted a written complaint to the police, demanding the immediate arrest of the accused, an impartial investigation, and exemplary punishment for those involved in the attack.
District Congress president Nirupam Dey strongly condemned the incident, alleging that the attack was a calculated attempt to intimidate opposition workers and disrupt their political programmes. He also questioned the role of the administration, urging authorities to ensure that the investigation remains fair and free from political influence. Dey stressed that law enforcement agencies must act promptly to restore public confidence and maintain law and order.
Following discussions with senior police officials, the Congress leadership agreed to temporarily withdraw the protest after receiving assurances that appropriate legal action would be taken. However, the party issued a clear warning that if the accused are not arrested within the next 24 hours, it will intensify its agitation with continuous demonstrations and larger mass movements across the district.
To prevent any further escalation of the situation, additional police personnel have been deployed in and around the Chandrapur Club area. Security has also been tightened to maintain peace and avoid any untoward incidents.
Dharmanagar Police confirmed that an investigation into the alleged attack has already been initiated. Officials stated that all aspects of the case are being examined and assured that necessary legal action will be taken based on the findings of the investigation.
