Much to the consternation of the ruling ally BJP Tipra Motha Party (TMP) chief Pradyot Kishore Debbarman has made a bold prediction regarding the 2028 Tripura Assembly elections, asserting that it would mark the beginning of Tiprasa rule in Tripura. Speaking at a public gathering in Matabari, Udaipur, on Thursday, Debbarman emphasized that achieving this goal hinges on the fulfilment of ‘Thansa’—the Kokborok term for unity.
The announcement of Pradyot Kishore has reasons to set alarm bell to ruling BJP which went extra length to please the TIPRA Motha even at the cost of its own Janajati Morcha. The BJP to keep Pradyot Kishore in good humour even fielded his sister and unknown face as BJP candidate in East Tripura Lok Sabha seat. Now the Tipra Motha chief appeared determined to oust the BJP itself from the power in next elections.
Roadmap to Political Dominance
Debbarman’s address made it clear that his party is strategizing to secure a majority in the next assembly elections. Currently, TMP holds 14 seats, making it the second-largest political entity in the state. The party, which entered the BJP-led coalition through a post-poll understanding, is now setting its sights on consolidating power in the upcoming elections.
He underscored the significance of the 2026 Tripura Tribal Areas Autonomous District Council (TTAADC) elections, stating that their outcome will serve as a foundation for TMP’s victory in 2028.
“The 2026 elections we shall surely win. But 2028 is the most significant year. It took 200 years for India to gain independence from British rule and 35 years to oust the CPI(M). I am asking for just three more years. If we stay united, Tiprasa rule will be established in 2028. Our children’s future will be secured,” Debbarman declared.
Vision for the Tiprasa Community
Elaborating on his priorities, Debbarman stressed that his primary concern is the welfare of his community rather than the party’s political gains.
“My biggest concern is my people, not my party. I want to ensure that English education becomes accessible to our children. The time for seeking benefits has passed. I have enough land—I do not need land rights. The present generation must fight to secure the rights of their future generations,” he asserted.
Response to Bangladesh and Protecting Tiprasa Identity
Responding to recent remarks by Md Yunus, the Chief Advisor of Bangladesh’s interim government, Debbarman reaffirmed the strength of the Tiprasa community in defending their land.
“If Bangladesh poses a threat, the people of Tripura will ensure that our rightful share of Greater Tipraland is reclaimed. Several invasions against Tripura have failed due to the bravery of its people. The Jamatia community has been known for its valor, and we have honored their legacy by installing statues of Rai Kasam and Rai Kasak at the TTAADC headquarters. These figures were not just Reang heroes; they were heroes of the entire Tiprasa race,” he proclaimed.
Countering Political Attacks
Debbarman also expressed frustration over the negative campaigns being run against him. He reaffirmed his commitment to the Tiprasa people, vowing to continue the struggle for their rights despite political opposition.
With the 2026 ADC elections approaching, Debbarman’s speech signaled a determined push towards consolidating Tipra Motha’s influence, setting the stage for an ambitious bid to achieve Tiprasa rule by 2028.
